Cargo Floor Panel Question

So while I’m on a bit of a roll with the more minor repairs it’s time to address the elephant in the room that is the floor in the crew cab section.

Whilst in South Africa a section of the floor has been replaced with a sheet of flat metal.

Looking at the repair / replacement cargo floor panels available they all seem to be for earlybays.

Are there any big differences I should be aware of for a late bay ?

It’s a 75 RHD crewcab and the panels I’ve found so far seem to have a pressing for the sliding door - which I don’t have. Are they all the same ?

Under the floor all the outriggers etc are good. Nice and solid under there. It’s just this missing ribbed section that I’m trying to make good.

Because it’s just a sheet of steel, I have nothing to compare it to.

    Thanks,

  2. Give Schofields a call , they helped me out no end with my new cargo floors , even suggesting the cheaper repro ones were actually as good as the genuine VW ones , which they were - a perfect fit

Obviously the van floor will be different to a crew cab but they`ll be familiar with your needs .
No wanting to interfere but that sheet looks solid , a possible can of worms when you lift it ??

I hear you mate but - I know it’s there - and it bugs me. Looking at the minimal welds holding the sheet metal floor panel in, I think removal will be the easy bit.
Will give Schofields a bell and see what they say
about a ribbed cargo floor panel.

Is the corrugated floor under there? They might have tacked on the flat sheet to make the floor flat rather than repair it?

  5. What’s it look like from underneath?

Ribbed floor is gone. Once this plate is removed , only the floor supports will remain. It’s been rather crudely cut too :(

It’s all pretty solid as far as I can see. Will snap a pic when it dries up a bit.

  8. Hoping they do a specific repair panel or you'll have buy the full floor - not cheap....!

As far as I understand it’s a standard van floor and goes all the way to the back of the treasure chest , reasonable job to do

So I’ve had an email from Schofields.

They’re waiting for a guy called Rick to let me know in his opinion which cargo floor panel they recommend for the crewcab.

In the meantime I’ve been watching a few YouTube videos on cargo floor repair and replacement.

Several people seem to be bonding cargo floors to the crossmembers and only welding the edges.

This idea appeals to me - the less welding I have to do the better - but is it a viable & recommended repair method or a bodge ?

It seems a lot of modern cars such as McLaren have chassis that are bonded not welded together.

    Your thoughts / opinions welcome.

The last one I did I welded every third undulation and staggered the positions for each top hat. Plug welds are arguably stronger welds than the originals. If you're going to plug weld along the edges (to the sills) you may as well do a few more?
