Cargo floor advice please

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by leflipflop, Nov 7, 2020.

  1. Good afternoon all
Im mid changing left b-pillar, arch, seat pan etc. The bulge panel (aft arch) is cut out as its chud. Ive now found where the floor meets the bulkhead someone has kindly resin filled it all.

Seems the section from bulkhead to where the ridges in the cargo floor start needs to be removed/replaced.. Any advice/pointers as im stuck.

That’s the top of the front top hat between the jacking points , try to cut the floor without going through the top hat though you can always weld it up

  3. Is it suppose to be a top hat there then.. From what i can make out mines half of one then.. Almost as though they cut some out to try access this crud area... Couldnt fix so just resin filled it.. Buggers did a half decent job filling it too haha didnt notice before i cut the bulge out and could see there was resin on the metal

Did a bit deeper, that top hat might be cast from resin!

  5. I think a lot of people end up repairing the outer layer of metal in the wheel well and cargo floor and don’t repair the metal in the top hat as it’s one of those steel sandwiches with a can of worms on the side.

The top hat is hard to get to and to do it right you have to cut back the floor far enough to get to the whole top hat and that cut can extend the width of the bus depending on how bad the top hat is.

When I did mine I ended up cutting a whole strip of good floor and wasn’t clever enough at the time to remove carefully. I spent a lot of time making those front floor sections. It’s still holding up 20 years later.

  6. Just to add...cut the floor a little behind the top hat, like above the rear flange of the top hat.

  7. Really appreciate the input and the above defo now makes sense..

As you said, i think the arch skin was replaced and not the tophat so makes sense... I guess grinder time haha
