Cardboard sheet thing for engine bay roof

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Baydreams, Apr 25, 2012.

  1. Hello, hello, what a lovely day it is! Can someone help me please.

I've got two thick cardboard pieces which fit to the roof of the engine bay; one for the left and one for the right. They're peppered with loads of factory drilled holes. I don't know if they're a universal / original-factory-fit thing. Anyway, some bugger (who I'd love to name and shame, but, for legal purposes, have been advised not to), has knicked one of them. Where can I buy a replacement from? I called VW Heritage and they think no-one manufactures these anymore.

it's basically a wooden baffle to hold the soundproofing above in place anyway, i haven't got it at all in mine the soundproofing has been replaced with silver insulation type stuff that has been taped to the body of the van, as jen says more to burn...earybays have metal ones as well.

  5. It's only waterproof hardboard, so you could make your own.

If your engine catches fir, you'll bigger problems to deal with...

I have a pair of metal ones for a late bay without engine inspection hatch up for grabs. I think they owe me about £25 + post. Very good condition, just a bit dirty. I got them to see if they'd fit my 68 - no chance, they're 2" too narrow.

  10. Thanks all lovely people. I've decided to make my own. Well actually, a mate who's got the proper tooling is going to make 'em (including a replacement for the one I've got as it's pretty brittle now). Thanks for all the advice though.

  18. 3mm aluminium works well especially if your hanging a firetec system on it ;)
