Cape Town Classic Car and Bike Show - Killarney Race track.

Discussion in 'Shows Events You've Missed unless you went' started by apaterson, Nov 16, 2016.

  1. So,
2 weeks ago we had the first classic car and Bike show held at our local racetrack, Killarney. This show has had a varied History locally in Cape Town, starting from back in the day at the Goodwood Showgrounds. 9For anyone who might be an ex-pat.)
Anyway, organizers got hold of some prominent Kombi and VW owners to get a good gathering of air cooled VW's present on the day. Clearly the Bus owners didn't disappoint.

While SMALL in terms of the shows I've seen on here and in Mags in the UK, this was still a pretty BIG turnout of Kombi's at one event, I think the numbers were just over 70 busses.

  2. A few more.

The "orange" bus below is on a world Tour, having alreay done South America to Alaska, then shipped to Belgium by the owners, then down here to Cape Town, where they are considering driving back up through Africa.. Amazing couple.

Nice photos :). That's a good amount of vws. Is the green pick up a Beetle? I've never seen one before.

Do you get rusty vans where you are, or do you not have the weather for it? Tho judging by the tree 3rd photo in it may get windy!

  4. Hi,
yep, it's some sort of Beetle "bakkie', a local conversion I'm sure.
We're on the Coast, (Tip of Southern Africa), so yes, there's a PILE of rust, it's a constant fight. And yes, we have what's known as the Cape Doctor, a South Easter that makes driving these van's rather exciting. (Automatic lane-changing occurs). :-0

  5. Fantastic pics, many thanks for sharing, I too like the beetle pick up, thought you might like to see a beetle shorty, that I saw at a local vw meet. HPIM2106.JPG

  6. Beautiful line up, would love to be driving my Kombi at the Cape again.......I was going to ask 'did you import the rusty ones?' , but I guess the salty sea air does what our salty roads do here.

  7. Amazing pictures , cheers for posting

  8. Great pics - thanks for sharing !
I'm in Cape Town at the moment but didn't realise the show was on until I read the write up in the Cape Times , looked a really good show - gutted we missed it . Headliners were The Dixie Pricks :D
    Always next year ...

  10. Would love to - any particular colour / year ? :D

Hang on , isn`t that you @paulcalf in the first picture stood next to the black and red Beetle ??

To be honest i saw maybe half a dozen beetles and only two or three vans around Cape Town .
The turnout at the show looks VERY good and would put many to shows to shame over here , i like the honest look of `em - the unrestored onesw are great - and due to the climate still in good condition

  13. One day (if i have the money and the time) i'll fly over and buy one and drive it back to the UK.
I'll need a skilled person on board to help sort any mechanical problems that may arise.
I'm not sure what wage I could afford to pay at this stage, but i'd select my 'support crew' from the ranks of TLB and other forums.
If they like safaris and scuba diving then it would be an added bonus

  14. That`s me out then ....

Judging by the pictures though there seems quite a healthy following out there despite not seeing many in CT and surrounding areas .
I had a think about this over a glass or three of rough red and came to the conclusion i could drive up to Leeds as i do a few times a year and even in summer only see one or two in the whole 400-ish miles .
Is it just me not trying hard enough or is everyone breaking down in France ??

Here`s the Jurgens by the way ...

If you can find the skilled mechanical person, I'd like to put myself forward for the 'liking safaris and scuba diving' part ;) ....I do have previous at bribing Zambian boarder officials if it helps

  16. Wow that front one looks awful

I think it's just luck of the draw how many campers you see on certain journeys.

A few years ago I saw none on the way to Mull and back

Two years later on the way to Islay and back we saw at least 4

I've seen none this weekend between Essex and Sheffield

  17. I'll include you in the interviews when the time comes!

Finding the skilled person may be hard seeing as @Lasty doesn't consider himself skilled!

  18. Thanks for the comments.
Mine's only "active" when we either go for a Camp out, or if I need large items collected or transported. We also attend a number of shows and such, and it's usually a good 8 to 12 busses that are the usual guys, but this even surprised me with how many pitched up. And yes, even living here, I only see one on the road every now and then, they really aren't regularly used or driven around.

    Cheers

    Alan
