I think you answered this in your first post. Never had one, didn't know what you were getting. Now you know and aren't convinced it's your thing. Sell it,buy something modern.

  5. I hate driving long distances ,but I'd even hate it more if I had to do it in a transit...:D

I have some great memories and pictures of camping in my various old buses ,to take a picture of my new white T5 in different locations, I would'nt waist the film ,it's bad enough taking pictures of a brown T25...;)

On a personal note , I like you and all the trails and tribulations you have had with the van would be now wasted...

  6. That's another thing against swapping. I've pretty much ironed out all the niggles with the bus now and got it how I want it, so why change.

  7. I do plenty of rushing around for work,I don't want to tear about all over the place in my time .When going to France for instance,we take a day to drive to Portsmouth ,cross overnight and then pootle ,the holiday starts when the engine does.

  10. I think you summed up your feelings about your Bay in your first post. Your modern rush rush lifestyle doesn't fit the slowness of these old vans and you don't really want to be thrashing the guts out of it.

Maybe its time for you to sell the Bay and get a modern camper which will rush you to your camp site plus give you more mod cons than the old Bay does.

Some folks on here like their T5's but they cost more than other makes. Its not essential to buy a VW.

Speaking as someone who did the same....
Get a transit (unless you way to stay in vw for the show scene)
I made my bay from dog to good sold it and stayed vw, if I had the chance again I would buy a generic camper.

  12. You are going too far in it.

    Remember the motto of the late bay club, what I and many others have embroidered into their panties;

'To travel hopefully is better than to arrive".

  13. We did Italy in the van, but stopped and camped for a few nights on the way down and on the way back. We met people in Italy from the UK who had done the whole thing in one hit in a modern car, but it didn't sound like much fun.

I've had a few buses and they require more focussed attention to drive than a modern car. They don't respond well to quick decisions so you are always thinking further ahead and it's tiring. I hate to say this but the early with 2 splines lowered was by far the least effort on a long fast journey.
Or slow down to a speed where it's relaxing. I tend to hammer on the motorway and potter everywhere else.

Even with a newer camper I don't travel around in haste. I tootle along around 65mph and watch the Couriers and plumbers race past at 80-90mph. As already said, the journey is part of the adventure. I remember driving across France in my T25 - over 500 miles in one day, and I didn't enjoy it as much as the next year wher we took a couple of days to get to Ille De Re and enjoy the scenery etc etc.

My newer van gives me some extra 'luxuries' compared to a 1970s or even a 1980s van but it does feel a bit sterile sometimes. I need someone with an artistic or homely touch to help make it look more comfy - I still love the old style look.

As for maintenance - I'm glad I'm not under the van every weekend, usually something used tgo go wrong in the harshist of weathers too. So far I've been lucky with the Tranny.

You and me need to have a drink and swap tales one day. I think we might have a lot in common and laugh like two old geezers watching the young uns chat up a girl!

I didn't that year, but I wished I had. Lots of fantastic cycling along most of the West Coast of France.
