Calling all Dormobile owners

  1. I have a complete original Dormobile interior/ conversion and was wondering if if other owners out there have fitted a full width rock and roll bed in replacement for the uncomfortable original?

  2. Not full width but many years ago I fitted a 3/4 JK rock n roll bed, works well enough

I remember the front perches on a table that's like a fat ironing board - looks dodgy but it was surprisingly sturdy albeit really high up.
I'm trying to remember why the bed is so high up - does it have drawers under the bed accessed from the rear hatch? That might be a problem with a std type height RR bed?

  4. My '68 Tourvette had drawers under the bed which were only about 3" deep but when you pulled out the bed and dropped in the cushions you were level with the cabinets and lower window so higher than most but a great interior and I seem to remember it being real wood - possibly oak with a plywood bed base ...
As for fitting a full width you'd obviously lose some cabinets but it would be up to you how you reconfigure the interior.

  5. Yes I have a full width and I modified my long unit to make it all fit in, not touching nose on roof any more!!

  6. I've seen some where they keep all the dormobile units and get a full with bed.

You can add a bit of removable cushion over the cooler, then don't slide the bed over.

Then you are full width except for the spare wheel, which if removed can also be cushioned over.

I have some photos somewhere as my mates looked at how to do this on a dormobile.

Let me know if you want me to try and dig them out

I think they work like that as standard, you can see the units and table are deliberately made at the same height. This was mine but I only camped in it for one night or maybe it was two.

  8. usually the bed slides over the cooler, leaving a gap by the sliding door - so not full width bed.

Some people stick a bit of cushion over the cooler, then don't slide the bed fully over - then you get full width.

We must have done that. The van started as a Devon but I converted it into a Dormobile because I like the pop tops...Then I had to sell it to pay some bills but we went camping once for the hell of it after all that effort. I expect the interior came ready adjusted with extra cushions and I never new that wasn't just how they were.

  11. Thanks all your replies and ideas I wanted to retain the original interior as much as possible so I will buy a piece of foam for the cool box shunt over the cushion at the tailgate end that should give us a little more room
