Cab Fumes

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by EggBoxes, Jun 13, 2020.

  1. I suspect my 1600 heat exchangers maybe leaking into the cab.
Wondered if there's anyway of testing in situ before removing.

Use of a small bird other than the Mrs.
Lock in gear, low pressure comp up the exhaust via a potato.

Have you got all the heater controlls in the front connected if not you can block off the heat exchangers at the back, check the seals on the rear hatch and engine lid as well

  3. It’s likely to be oil fumes rather than exhaust, due to oil leaks from the pushrod tubes.

    Easy enough to spot.

  4. First run out in it for a while.
I have heater controls. Exchangers aren't original, 5 years old probably.

It is probably oil, I will get under check the tubes.

Still seems a daft point to sunk cab air in from, chinese diesel heater might be safer .

If you have a carbon monoxide detector kicking about would it be a good idea to temporarily, or permanently site one inside. I’d guess mild oil fumes would not be a risk but CO should show if it was leaking exchangers?

  6. It is slightly daft, but if you’ve got no niffs in the engine room, should be fine.

It is usually the pushrod tubes leaking oil on to the heat exchangers.

The air for the engine bay and hot air feed comes from high up on a Bay Window. About twice as far up from other vehicles exhausts as the cabin air intake on my Peugeot.

The pipes inside heat exchangers are usually protected by the outer shells from corrosion - the walls tend to thin where they get splashed directly outside of the shells .
So its unlikely to be exhaust fumes.
Look and run your finger or a tissue along the top of the heat exchangers.
If its covered in oil, also check and maybe replace the rocker cover gaskets and maybe the springs holding the rocker covers on.

Open the HX's manually so as you know they're open and run it with them open to avoid the fumes in this warmer weather. that will give you a little time to get to the bottom of the problem.

I had to have the heating on yesterday in the bus ...drying my wifes shoes and socks out after a downpour soaked them walking to the bus at the services.. what warmer weather ?

And, I wouldn't have the heating on in my bus if it was poisoning me, no matter what the weather :)

It was a long way up norf. It was just to the north of the M4 because we were in the east bound services.

Only cross the M4 for essential business like Dubfreeze and Techenders.

Otherwise leave that north to the Vikings.
Poetry and mead in Winchester for me.

    And quinoa and cappucino.
