bumper respray

  1. Hi all, I am doing a lot of the resto on my 76 bay myself as I find DIY somewhat enjoyable, esp with the interior and engine parts. The only bit i ma not comfortable with at all is exterior paint. I am starting with my bumper as the rest of the bus is in very good knick but the bumper has a lot of scratches so want it sorting out.

Is this something quite simple to do ones self? I have taken it off and its sat in my garage waiting for a sand but is it liable to turn out a botch job as I have no experience in spray cans / guns

    thanks

Best advice is to bare metal it, fill any dents then paint. Bare metalling sounds like more work, but will be less work than trying to fill chips, avoids any reactions with existing paint and will look better when it's done. Plus you don't have to bugger about.

Splash out on a can of good quality etch or zinc primer. This will go on thin and won't need sanding. Etch is recommended for old steel. You can get cans of top coat mixed at Halfords which will be the correct colour (L90D) and are very easy to paint with. Do one thinish see-through coat, let it flash off (10 minutes) then a nice heavy coat - stop just befor it runs. Or stop when you think you could get away with just a bit more before it runs. lol

Whatever you do, don't use brilliant white of any description, or hammerite because it will look Marmitee.
