Bucket list

  1. Evening all. I finally bought a bus after wanting one for donkey's years. It's a 1979 delivery van (twin slider) with a 2000cc type 4 (still trying to work out if it's past it's sell by date). All the welding and running gear was completed by the previous owner and so it's over to me to get it back on the road. There's still a shed load to do (and buy) and I intend to enjoy the refurb as much as possible. I'm not a complete novice, but it's close. But I'm enthusiastic and hopefully a fast learner. I intend to keep it as a van and invest in a decent awning. I like the idea of being able to use it as a van and a campervan. I might even drive it to work. I live near Northwich and Knutsford in Cheshire. If you fancy giving me some advice in return for a brew and bickies, let me know. I'll upload a few pics later.

  11. Hi and welcome, I remember something to do with paint, try this (from google) its free and works ok
    Resize a picture using Paint

To resize a picture using Paint
    1. Open Paint by clicking the Start button [IMG], clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, and then clicking Paint.

    2. Click the Paint button [IMG], click Open, click the picture you want to resize, and then click Open.
    3. On the Home tab, in the Image group, click Resize.

    4. In the Resize and Skew dialog box, select the Maintain aspect ratio check box so that the resized picture will have the same aspect ratio as the original picture.

If the Maintain aspect ratio check box is selected, you only need to enter the horizontal value (width) or vertical value (height). The other box in the Resize area is updated automatically.

    5. Do one of the following in the Resize area, and then click OK:
      • To resize your picture by a certain percentage, click Percentage, and then enter a percentage to reduce the width by in the Horizontal box or a percentage to reduce the height by in the Vertical box.

      • To resize the picture so it's a specific size, click Pixels, and then enter a new width in the Horizontal box or new height in the Vertical box.
    6. Click the Paint button [IMG], point to Save as, and then click the picture file type for the resized image.
    7. Type a new file name in the File name box, and then click Save.

  12. I'm on it cheers

  14. I bought this stand from SGS and they assured me it would fit a type 4. I couldn't make it fit without drilling a 12mm hole for one of the arms. Great quality though and clever fold away design so still pleased with it. All I need to do now is try and work out if the engine is worth more than the stand!:chewie::chewie::chewie:

  15. Welcome from West Lancashire - good luck with completing the restoration.

  16. Hi Flakey, @bernjb56 can you recommend an air cooled specialist around our neck of the woods. I'd like to get a good idea as to the condition of my type4 2L which I've never heard running. My plan would be to drop the engine off at the garage and let them test it and quote for any works. At that point I could decide whether to have a go myself. I've taken all the ancillaries off so that would save them time. Does this make sense? I have done a compression test and all about 80psi but haven't checked the valve clearances.

If you've already done compression why not check valves, &end float. Other than stripping it down what else could they do.
If you want to take it a stage further whip the heads off and have a look, change the oil put new pushrods tube seals on and get it running.
I'd learn quick to trust yourself with these things, read lots of stuff on here it's easy to run away with lots of money.
Type4s are stronger engines generally than 1s,

How did you check the compression?

  19. Yep you're right. I think the lack of progress is tempting me to get a garage to sort it which goes against the grain if I can do it myself. Having a go now at checking valve clearances. Cheers
