I knew that knackle knackle donk noise from the back wasn't good. All new cv joints and one appears to have let go. 5 hours for RAC apparently!

If you tell them you're female and expecting, and they'll be with you in a jiffy.

    Good luck!

Edit: Actually that's not true. There was a story last year where one expectant mother was dragged from one service station to another by the RAC and their 'trusted partners' over a 24 hour period, until she finally got home.

28 ft lbs , new Schnorr washers and the three fish plates between bolt heads ( stops it coming undone if the CV joint moves and flexes the bolts under torque, acts like a loop of metal locked by the Schnorr washers to the bolts.)

Then go round twice with the torque wrench to make sure you didn't do only five of the six up properly.

You may only need new bolts. British suppliers on eBay sell bags of 25 high tensile bolts and bags of washers for about the same price as 4 or 5 from the usual suppliers.. .

I have quite a few of the fish plate pieces in a box, if you need some PM me.

The RAC .. their recent record seems much worse recently anecdotally than the AA. Partly because of their reliance on third party partners who are still understaffed, and poorer pay for their employees than the AA.

I was at home about 2 1/2 hours including a tow home by the same AA patrol who came out after 45 mins when I blew up my engine..

  4. Are you far from home?

I highly doubt you mean broke. You mean let go of the gearbox/wheel?
That'll teach you for trying to use your van. :D

Everything is still attached. Yes Mike they were all torqued with schnorr washers.
Yes I think it broke Zed. Inner n/s is flopping around inside the gaiter.
Anyway nice RAC man just rang, 1hr away and he'll tow me home.

Chunky things to break? Look forward (sorry!) to seeing what you find.
    Damned annoying.

It will be interesting. I've heard there are some rubbish quality ones around but 724 miles? I've just looked on Brickwerks and they have GKN/Lobro for a T3 - will they fit?

  10. Hard to think how that great chunky joint could break. We await your post-mortem...

It did make a loud clunk as I went to pull away on the roundabout and then all drive went. All bolts are still there and tight I think.

Maybe drive shaft has snapped. When I did my ball joints I paid £15/kit! Cheapest I could find. They still make the wheels go round, maybe I was lucky.

I think you might be right. Certainly feels like it.

  14. Have a squint with a torch. We must know!

  15. Sorry to hear of your woes but like the others I’ll eagerly await the autopsy pictures
