I used to be with the AA, and like others, got fed up with the annual phone call to bring the premium down to an acceptable level. Also, whilst using the AA for recovery (my Brother's Peugeot van driveshaft failed) they sent a 3rd party to recover us. Got chatting to the driver (no, it wasn't 'He's a very very nice man' ) and he said that he responds to breakdowns from different companies and out of the top 3, Green Flag is the most reliable. The other two times i've used the AA recovery was for Corrado head gasket (first 3rd party recover truck turned up to inform me that he hasn't enough hours left on his Tacho to recover us) and the second time was the lovely air-cooled engine seize from which I got towed home by a Renault van with a solid tow bar, very scary experience!! Since then, I've paid for Green Flag's Mayday service (Caravan Club) and ironically never used it yet!
Another shout for Mayday. For a bit over a hundred quid, you and spouse are covered irrespective of whose vehicle you're in (could even be a friend's, I think). Furthermore if you have a caravan, they'll take it to your (booked) holiday site and bring it back home after your holiday if they can't fix your vehicle. No vehicle age limit either!
Quick update. Following my emails to them and a phone conversation earlier I'm advised that non - MOT'd vehicles are covered if they don't need one i.e. historic vehicles. Premium reduced by £55 and 3 extra moths free of charge. No limit on the number of call outs. I've gone for that. I can always cancel should I change my mind!
