Engine is pronounced complete and ready to rock. Tomorrow (and any available time in the next week or so) will be "think about cooling" time, these pesky motors that need water! Bloody nuisance.
Yep, from the states, cast aluminium. When I can afford it, I'll change the headers to give me max ground clearance, for now these cheapies will do.
Up to the turbo then out the back (towards the front) probably turn left by the gearbox and have a side exit cut into the n/s sill, JDM drift styleee.
Currently I have a choice, the "man who can" says North of 300bhp is possible on the turbo and injectors I have but it'll be a bit peaky to say the least. He reckons he can do a 'hill climb' map that'll probably only make 250hp but with mahoosive torque so much more driveable and better mpg. Personally I think ANYTHING North of 200hp is sufficient but they made more than that std so I've set the bar quite low. If I had the money I'd have a switchable ECU but they cost more than the entire project so far!
You have to bear in mind that Bill had a 1600 lawnmower engine as std and wasn't exactly "swift", I've also gone down the plumbed in heater route as well. It's more than possible that he'll become my daily driver now.
Go for as much driveable power as you can, you know what a "fast" vehicle is like - really great at first, but by the end of the week you have got so used to the welly you think you must have broken it.
This build is starting to get really exciting... I wish I had just a small amount of the knowledge you guys have. My hat is well and truly tipped.
You probably do. I genuinely knew next to bugger all about VWs when I bought Ted three years ago. (Some say I still do). I've learnt a lot along the way though and made heaps of mistakes but I've also made lots of friends who help and I've managed to build my own type 4 1910cc motor which is still running very well. Next up is to learn how to fabricate a modified cross member to hold the bell housing and clear the Turbo. Best go buy a job lot of cutting discs.
Can you not put a switch in, that either turned up/down the boost on the turbo? Managed to do that on my old RS Escort.
How many RS motors have made it alive today? To get such silly numbers from a bog stock 2 litre, everything has to be spot on, wacking up the boost will just melt the pistons.
But if you have a switch that turns down the boost then switches it back to normal when you fancy some fun....
