  3. Final systems PU body sealant from jtb supplies on fleabay

  4. What are you sticking together with it?
Let us know how it performs as something decent is going to be needed for my sliding door.

  5. A bit of non-structural plating underneath, to keep the rain out. No point in stripping out the interior or running the risk of setting light to 40-year old wax inside. I'll let you know how I get on.

As I recall, VW did use squishy mastic to glue the door panels inside. I've also heard of folk doing the lower slider panel by glueing the repair panel on, so it doesn't warp when welding.

If glueing stuff's good enough for Boeing and Airbus, it's good enough for a van .

  6. Paul glued my sliding door repair on using a structural binder and it was supposed to be good stuff but it hasent held
It's a shame as we both had high hopes for it ☹️️

  8. Bugger..:(
That was a 2 part epoxy wasn't it..
    Not cheap
Is it just the paint that's cracked,

  9. I'll have to have a look back on the laptop to see exactly what it was but it was proper stuff not just a polyurethane sealer
The two panels appear to have separated and cracked the filler and paint☹️️

The trouble with using stuff like this is that it requires specialist knowledge to apply and cure. The lab rats say one thing on the data/application sheets but there's no substitute for field trial & error.
So many different factors affect the final bond. Material stock, surface prep, application conditions (including ambient temp & humidity), bead size, compression time, batch age etc etc.
It's easy even for experienced users to get it wrong & if IRC this was a bit of an experiment a couple of years ago when it was done. Credit for using a 2 part system but without knowing all the application parameters it's hard to pass judgement whether it's product related or application error :(

  12. Right, a few wheel arch crusty bits plated over using the sticking method. Clipped a bit of galvanised steel plate, glued it on with Sikaflex AT, stuck like a good 'un: you're not going to get them off again easily. Even holds on vertical surfaces. Let it cure for a few days, then coated with epoxy mastic (crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside :)). Works a treat, recommended.

    A winner!
