I've been up Machen mountain on Vespa 50 Special to pick Magic Mushrooms - just filled our pockets as it was only deemed an offence if you packaged them!
Only just seen your post! I've been up it twice, first time when I was about 8 years old. Walked from the campsite at loch Morlich, up Cairngorm and across to Ben Macdui. That was a long day and the only time I've seen our mad cocker spaniel completely knackered. Her paws were quite raw after all the rock walking. More recently (15 years ago) went up again on my 50th birthday. This time from the car park at the bottom of the railway. Again walked up to Carngorm summit and across the plateau to Macdui. It's a lovely walk on a fine day. The last half mile or so is rather boring and heavy going over the boulder field and to be honest, the view at the top isn't great. Coming back got a bit of rain and cloud at ground level, i.e. fog, so good map and compass is essential though gps was also useful. Picture is me at the summit with Lucy and Cassie in their trouser suits.
Sorry that was my mistake I’m also on a couple of other forums The life and works of Claude Monet and Tudor and Elizabethan Sussex I must of started those threads on one of those
Thank you for the sensible reply. I am still trying to work out if I want to walk this mountain solo in the summer or if it's better to combine it with a winter trip and do a guided walk to it.
I personally wouldn't attempt it in winter as it's so weather dependent and you might be up there for days waiting for an opportunity. Even in summer it can get quite nasty but I'd always go with someone, just in case!
Rubbish !!!! Scotland is well known for temperate and balmy climate as well as its friendly and incredibly handsome people.
I've done the twin peaks of Dianne without oxygen. That was terrifying enough. Thankfully, I'd practised when I did the southern col of Ann Widdecombe.
