@JAFFA I’m also considering the Red9 Double wishbone suspension, although not because my bus is unstable. Mine is set up much as yours’s but lowered with drop spindles and stiffened with coil-over dampers and it isn’t significantly affected by cross winds or when passing trucks.

There are a couple of threads about the suspension.

Unfortunately, the reviews I’ve found are not particularly subjective and probably compare worn out standard suspension with an all new system but most people seem satisfied. However, it has to be accepted that there are design compromises to make it fit within the existing chassis rails and it’s particularly disappointing that there is no provision to fit an anti-roll bar. And it does not have TÜV or any other independent certification – you may consider that significant. As with any modification you should notify your insurer, but I doubt if many do.

@JAFFA could you have a go in someone else’s van and see what the difference is? Or get someone with a van to drive yours and compare?

  3. Thanks again...

All stock... all new from tyres up to but not including steering box, except KYB shocks and heavy duty ARB front and rear.

    Nice and firm on corners.

Steering box appeared to need only a little adjustment... noting vehicle been off the road for pretty much 25 years.

Will experiment with tyre pressures... in hope it is that simple.

Otherwise will revisit each element with fresh eyes.

Am sure proper stock set up has to better than what I’ve got going on at the moment.

Had beetles for years and daily drove a type 3 Variant for 13 years.

Looking at vehicle... front end looks a little high to me... not sure if the front is high or the back end has sagged... but been stood for a long time with no engine or fuel tank for quite a while.

Red9 thing is just checking out the options, without fully researching seems quite drastic, expensive, uncertified, maybe?

Photos below... sorry struggled to get orientation correct...

  4. That stance looks fine. The front will drop down a surprising amount when you sit in it!

What I noted when I had my early tracking perfectly and not blowing about was when the steering box developed a lot of play it made no difference to that.

Also ye olde 4 wheel laser blah. I visited 2 places same day just to get mine measured. Neither agreed, I mean miles out from each other. Neither agreed with my idiot proof dunlop gauges either so I'm still none the wiser.

This is the first bus I've owned that I can't get to behave correctly. It should be possible by correct adjustment even if it's a bit worn IME...which mine is not. Seems like the faster I go the better it is so no worries on the m way but it blows about at 40-50mph. Grr.

  6. There were some overly tight ball joints being sold a few years ago giving people problems

If it's my van your refering to Mike it's not quite stock as it has heavy duty arb's and kyb's front and rear. So very similar set up to the vehicle in question really. The ARB kit made a big improvement to my van's motorway stability & handling.
    Hope this helps.

Sorry I forgot. It didnt roll as much as mine, maybe that misled me into corners...
