Im going to drop me engine to replace the crankshaft oil seal, I have only ever dropped the box and engine together but as Im doing the seal theres no point. My question is do you have to support the automatic gearbox when you remove the engine in a bay?
Late bays should have two bolts suspending the gearbox at the back end. You should remember having to undo two bolts when you took out both engine and box together .unless they were "forgotten and not installed" beforehand.
No need to support the auto trans as it has its own mounts. Remove the drive plate bolts & clamp a bar to the bellhousing to prevent the possibility of the torque converter dropping out.
I just found this thread. Both Bentley and Haynes are saying to support the transmission when you take the engine out. That's both for a manual and and auto. It looks unnecessary to me as in my 79 auto it remains attached to the hanger above. I'm guessing this is a bit of detail which hasn't been taken out of earlier versions of the manuals. Anybody?
This makes a change from all the political threads. I don’t know the answer because I don’t have an auto but post #3 seems clear to me. However, perhaps the question should be can you pull the engine back far enough without lowering the transmission? And I don’t know the answer to that either because I’ve never removed just the engine – I always remove both together. @Gooders will know.
They mean you have to explain to it that you are always there for it, and if it needs anything, just ask.. The Late Bay has a rubber mounted transmission mount that all gearbox types hang from, so the transmission can stay. Dont undo the two mounting bolts up top, unless it is supported by something that can hold about 30kg.. However with the Type 4 engine using more space, you may have to drop both engine and gearbox together remembering not to bend the hardware round the front of the gearbox as you do it.
I've done it both ways in the past, and without support when I left the trans in. But I did worry I was going to bend something.
Ours is a 74 and although it mentions in the manual to support the auto box the top hanger holds it in place. Don’t forget to bolt a bar across the torque converter to stop it falling off. Don’t need to drop the transmission down as there is no shaft to line up with a clutch. Just jack the engine back up to get the bell housing bolts in. Rear hanger remounted then the drive plate bolts.
