Definitely should not have oil on contact surface. So you’d set with a non oiled feeler gauge

  2. They have a light coating of grease/oil that needs removing or they won't work.

So a wise man once told me

  3. Which is why you need to check continuity with the points closed , they're lightly oiled from the manufacturers...

Folded piece of paper drawn through the gap should clean them

  6. Check for continuity, it's ok gapped them for 0.016 in. Resetting lards on my own so I can work slowly but harder to test. Thanks so far everybody.

  7. Ok, so still no joy. Any ideas how to check for spark when you've go nobody to crank it whole you hold the plug?

12v at coil. Also 12 v at bottom of coil if negative removed.

  9. Sitwell Arms, thanks, much appreciated. If you have a spare battery we could use briefly, that would be amazing, mines been thru the mill today

  10. Ok .
Turn by hand until points closed .
    ignition on .
Flick open points with a screwdriver WITHOUT SHORTING TO EARTH , there should be a small spark between the contacts when the points open .
    Turn off ignition .

Just thinking out loud here , and hopefully stating the obvious but i`m assuming you`ve got a condenser fitted ??

    :hattip:

  11. Yes, condenser fitted.

  12. Phew ....
    Had to ask

Have you a spare to eliminate that being an issue ??

    :hattip:

  13. Ok, so dizzy cap off, turn engine until points closed, ignition on, then opened points with plastic handled screwdriver, saw nothing, ignition off.

  14. Yes, I used the condenser I took off when I fitted the electronic ignition. I have a spare too.

  15. Try changing the condenser but you should get a small spark with the above check .
If it was a large spark you`d suspect the condenser but with no spark i`d suspect a short to earth somewhere , possibly within the dizzy ?

Right at the start of the thread you said it fired...then slmost immediately decided it was an ignition fault.
Did it fire just as you gave up and let go of the key?

  17. Condenser measures 200nF, so that sounds like it's ok.

  18. Neither @MorkC68 nor I get a spark off #2's lead with a spare plug in it held against the block :(

  19. The points look set ok, gap is 0.016 inch, condenser seems to be a capacitor, but no sparks :(
