If @MorkC68 is ten minutes away.... always helps to have a 2nd brain pondering the problem.....

  4. .016 according to Google

I'll go and check my manual

  5. Now I've seen @Lasty s post I've saved myself a trip to the garage

  6. From memory, set the points and the basic timing should be JUST opening at the first Mark which should be 7 degrees btdc ...
Strobe up afterwards but won't be far away ....

  7. Can anyone think why I wouldn't get a spark with points? Got 12v on coil, and if neg disconnected we get 12v there too, so primary has continuity.

Real mystery this, RAC fella thinks coil is ok, but still no spark, new cap and rotor, condenser, points are unset, but are just fresh from the box.

I swapped electric for points a week ago. These moved it from 7 degrees before to 8 after, so definitely check with scope after.

Apparently it very easy to remove distributor and set points. Set on high part of cam so fully open, by eye to 0.5mm. Type 4 engine

  10. Points earthing out ?
Check with multimeter on continuity with ignition off...

  11. Did you clean the points before fitting them?

Check inside the distributor cap that the carbon centre pin is still there.

And check you are getting or not getting spark straight off the king lead from the coil.

It might actually be the ignition switch is on the edge of failing .. see if you can hotwire ( carefully ) from the coil to the battery ( dont short it to chassis !!!!)

  13. Where on points. Open contact shouldn't be causing a circuit with negative or positive?

No idea on points, not touched them in years

Is the rotor arm ok/complete? I have known pieces be missing and it not reaching far enough to touch the electrodes on the cap. Also known the sprung carbon contact in the top of the distributor cap to be missing.

  16. Done that with multimeter lead. Brand new rotar arm and dizzy cap.

  17. Ignition off .
Check live side (green?) Isn't earthing with points open and makes a circuit with the points closed .

  18. Might be worth putting the old dizzy cap and rotor back in , reason being they worked ?

  19. RAC guy given up :(

Old dizzy back in but with points. He reckoned my old coil was ok. Says he used his multimeter lead to hotwire it and we had a spark at the king lead when ignition was on and he earthed the king lead. I'm flummoxed too. Plugs wires now look misordered but I would still expect a spark.

  20. Brand new points, never used, would they be dirty?
