Another one for heating engineers. Boiler flow temperature

  1. Unfortunately, there is no temperature indicator.

  2. Guess. That’s what we do.

or look in the manual. The spec chart at the start will normally tell you the stat range. Normally something like 40-75. So then just turn it to about where 55c would be in that range. It’s not that important on a combi as you have no water storage

  3. What boiler is it?

  4. Worcester Bosch. 24i I think.

  5. Top job  @rustbucket swears by them.

Unfortunately the manual doesn’t give a minimum flow temperature for the heating control stat, but based on the max being 82, I’d suggest starting by turning the heating stat to about half way. Then see how you get on. If your house achieves the required room temperature, all be it at a slower rate than you are used to, then try a little lower. You’ll reach a point where the house won’t heat properly, then you’ve gone too low. Obviously this is a guess as I’ve got no idea what your house heat loss is like.

Using mine as an example. On factory setting I could heat my house in about 40mins, but the boiler would be at full rate for a large part if not all of that, so using lots of gas and probably hardly condensing. Now with a flow of only 50C it’s taking about two hours to heat the house but the boiler is almost never running above its minimum rate and a lot of the time it’s only running the water pump to circulate the heat and the burner is off.

im not 100% sure on the greenstars but I think they have a 4:1 modulation reduction. So in simple terms when the boiler is ticking over at low rate it’s using 25% of the gas it would use at full rate and it’s recovering more of that heat through better condensing.

  8. Cheers. I’ll bang it on half way and see how she goes. It’s my daughters house. She’s been driving me mad since having a smart meter display. I’ve threatened to bin it

55° would be no use on our system - boiler feeding a dhw cylinder. Wouldn't be enough hot water to run a bath while the wife's doing the washing up.

  11. You have your bath hotter than 55C??

    Are you made of Asbestos?

No, I like it more than 2" deep. Have to use cold as well to bring the level up for a decent soak.

  13. Fit a bigger cylinder? Find another wife?

    1. Bigger cylinder won't fit in airing cupboard.
    2. One wife is quite enough!
