Hi all. My existing alternator on my 2ltr type 4 is missing its intake cover. I've sourced one ready to install and was wondering if I have to take the alternator completely out to replace this cover (following Ratwells instructions) or can this be done insitu or with less dismantling? I'm also cutting out the gasket and have various thicknesses from 0.15 to 1.6mm and I was hoping for some advice on what thickness to use. Finally, if I do need to take the beastie out, is there any maintenance I can do whilst I have the alternator on my workbench. It is currently working well but just wondering. Ta very much as usual for the advice. Photo of parts diagram to make sure I'm talking about the right widget (#35)
If it's a newish alternator, one of the posts could be too long and may earth onto the cover. This is bad. There are many threads elsewhere about this common problem, worth checking as you go. I don't know if you could fit the back plate without taking it out, but I would anyway, it's likely to be quicker in the long run.
Thanks, I'll try and get a photo and see what type I've got. Hope it's the right one as I've already bought, cleaned up and painted the new cover!
This is what I found under the over the gasket I cut out of 1mm silicone baking sheet and a quick rewire after blowing all the sand out! Sent from my SM-T580 using Tapatalk
Hi Chris, your alt looks like a new or refurbed one and someone has already shortened the left hand terminal so it won’t short on the back cover when you out it on. For that the win you could fashion a couple of rubber bungs to fill the little slots on the perimeter (bumpers in Zedder’s excellent photo), to keep it nice and air tight.
Cheers. Have fashioned a gasket and all looks good there. Will look at bungs. Will also need to find some nuts (M5?) as these are missing
