    Definitely sounds like fuel.

It does look like a vac line missing directly under the carb?

  3. @vanorak may be right (if the vac takeoff is drilled through)! Try sticking your finger over the small pipe at the base of the manifold, and try again.

The carb isn't set up right IMO.

I'm thinking your man is one of those chaps who set the mixture to 2.5 turns and refuse to turn it more than 1 turn either way.

It's worth noting a new engine will be tight on account of the honed bores and new rings. It's not a great idea to start it up and let it tick over. In all probability a 1600 wouldn't anyway. Shame you're so far away, but @Baysearcher will sort it.

What time do you start or could you do a weekend?
Only as it'd be easier in the light....

  11. Bear in mind it should be cold when you do the valve clearances

  12. If you can touch 'em, you can do 'em ;)

Do the finger test on that manifold pipe before you go, or you may cook your new engine.

  13. Deffo don't want to cook the engine haha I think I can just bout coping with covering a hole

Block it with your finger. If there's suction, you need to block it off before driving it anywhere.

  17. ^this. Do it ;)! If there's no sucking, the manifold pipe hasn't been drilled through, which is good.

  18. Why would someone drill a hole?

It was a Saturday in a field actually. ;)

  20. The vacuum takeof is for your warm-air flap. It was either on the manifold, or on the rear of the carb. A third possibility is that VW put a pipe on manifold, but didn't drill it through, for manufacturing convenience.
