Did the metal tube use go stick out the fan housing near the carb, and have you since then stopped it doing that? If you have that's the the problem if not, as the outers are floating, their length doesn't matter until it actually hits the carb. Trust me, I know about these things.

  2. So there's 2 "tubes" ? (Or meant to be). Pretty sure mine just has the tube going through fan housing, it protrudes right through
Cables is in good shape, and operated fine previously.
Not sure what you mean by cable shorterner, but cable appears standard and as should be

  3. Can't remember how the tube was before, but yes its now flush with fanhousing, (well the flare sits on fan housing. And the cable sheath is now fitted over the other end of the tube.
    More wiggling shall ensue tomorrow

  4. That's how it should be. A metal tube, and a bell-end on the flexi tube.

I am connected again, I have the tube poking out from fan housing towards the carb, and the end of the acc cable sheath pushed through the tin on the opposites side.
Not sure if that's correct, but it works, must be how it was before.

Now a question for the setting of fast idle adjuster. I seem to remember people saying screw in till it touches the stepped can, then out a touch,

    whereas "vwresource" says this

Slowly turn the Fast Idle Adjuster screw in until it JUST touches the bottom of the stepped cam. Now screw it in another ΒΌ turn. This sets the throttle butterfly open the required 0.004", s

    Which is correct?

    Vw resource has it right.

    snotty and volkswombat like this.
  8. And...for confirmation...

When engine is warm the fast idle screw should sit on the bottom part of the cam like this

And NOT on the bottom step like This

Vw resource has it right. Other way would have the flap hitting the sides as a stop which wears the carb until the vac advance hole is permanently exposed making carb impossible to set up or even repair.

  10. just need to wind screw in in top pic till you can drag a bit of paper or 3 thow feeler thru

  11. @zedders you were right about the cable, not sure it should be like that though, maybe I have the incorrect cable fitted?

Anyway its back on the road, need a bit more more fine tuning at idle yet, but a bit hard when its only running on 3

Yet to see if the carb has stopped leaking aswell......

Yes I agree the cable is too short and when you found it wouldn't reach you did have the other bits in the right place.
