Accelerator cable through firewall/fanhousing

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by volkswombat, Jul 12, 2016.

  1. Is there a knack to getting the acc cable sheathe routed correctly?
Feels and lookzs like the most inaccessible place EVER , but appears that the acc cable sheath has come off the end of a tube , meaning my acc cable is too short to fit to carb.
Tried wiggling jiggling and swearing etc to get the cable back how it I think it should be but no success, how the hell do you sort it?

    Or have I broken it?

This all assumes you know what I'm on about.

    I'm going to cry soon

  2. Had fun with this when I had the engine out for the clutch change. The guide tube pushed rear ward and the front dropped into the fan housing.

Was a bugger to line up while balanced on a jack can you get a bright light behind the fan housing so you an see where to poke the tube?

  3. I'm working underneath, if i follow the acc cable from front of van I can just see it gok through a chassis section, and the end of a tube poki ng through from engine end, which the cable goes through. This is right up above and to rear of the gearbox ,

Don't think what I can see is rear of fan housing??

Anyway I can see the bit that needs joining , but just seems impossible to sort??

  4. Ah..... I think there is a gap between the rear of the fan housing and the tube you are playing with..... sorry there ends my knowledge.

  5. Its is the little tube that goes through fan housing, It goes right through fan housing, then there's a gap between fahousing and firewall, which the tube bridges, and then the tube continues through the firewall and pokjes out underneath, which is what I can see as described up there ^.
The cable sheath should fit over or into the tube (not sure which) , mine has come off and is a complete ball ache to sort.
Probably wouldn't be an issue if my engine was out! Grrr. Sob sob sob

I've never done it so this might be completely impossible but is it possible to thread a slightly stiffer wire into the tube from the engine bay end, tape it to the accelerator cable under the van and then gently pull and push the cable through using the thicker wire to help guide it.

If it's not on the tube the tube will be pushed through the fan housing, the length of the inner won't be effected.
Have a look at the pedal end. :)

    cables? how quaint.

  9. Finally got the cable outer back on to the tube, is that the most pita job on a van? Put tits on a snake that would.

Go to connect cable to carb, and still to short. WTF. I checked pedal end and all is good. It was fine before taking carb off so what on earth am I doing wrong??

Ooh I could crush a grape I'm so exasperated

I had this with ours. Get some pliers on it and tug it, I was convinced it was too short too but there was some slack in the cable. They don't leave much to play with so any slack can make it seem too short (p.s. I feel your pain I spent nearly 2 hours trying to pull ours through on a bit of string I'd threaded through).

  11. IfIm presuming the motor is bolted back in and all good ?

    :hattip:

  12. Will try more yanking in a bit, having a break from it.

The motor hasn't been out, all I did was remove the carb for a refurb.

  13. I've yanked and it make no difference. Maybe an inch short.

  14. How far does your metal throttle tube stick out of the "front" tinware (if you can remember)? If you've got a new one, they normally need a bit sawing off the end. If they're too long, the bell end of the throttle conduit will be hard to locate on the end of the steel tube - you might end up with a kink in the cable. Should stick out about half an inch, from memory.

  15. Yeah is about half inch, it's the same one was there before anyway.

I don't think there is any adjustment at the carb end. You could always try disconnecting the accelerator end from under the bus. Then connect the carb end correctly. Then you have more play / room at the front-end assuming you have the belly pan off to reconnect / wiggle.

Don't forget the usual caveats that I know nothing and I am in fact, an eedjit etc etc etc :)

Ps. Why was it off in the first place?

  18. Has the external conduit of the cable snagged on the end of the guide tube holding it back......seem to think mine kind of sat inside the tube a little ( I may be dreaming )....

  19. I took the carb off to refurb because that was leaking.

I don't know mate, surely must be something simple but I'm baffled.

The through fanhousing tube goes inside the Bowden tube that pushes against the tinware through the gearbox mount. Overlap about the inch you mention...
The through fanhousing tube often needs a cable tie on it to stop it coming back through the fanhousing.
Are you sure you do not have a little "cable shortener" sitting there which the cable is clamped into and then the shortener is clamped into the carburettor.

Or your throttle cable has frayed and is hanging up somewhere in the tubes from the front.

This could be a sign its time for a new cable.
