  1. Hi everyone I'm after some advise .
I've just been to a camping shop with the wife and I came up with a bright idea !
The idea was that I buy a trailer tent an tow that behind the bus as it can sleep my kids and still have space for the kitchen sink the wife wants to bring lol

But I have a few worries 1 being the weight I'm towing around the 450 kg fully loaded
2 the fact that I have rebuilt the rear chassis rails and would hope they take the strain

3 fitting of a tow bar ? I would have to make one my self to fit how I want around the rear bumper ; is this ok or does it have to be an approved one ?
Any help would be great peps cheers ash

the weight itself with a solid vehicle is not the issue - don't know how solid your bus is though, the make your own towbar thing? mmm new mot legislation states towbars and mountings are to be tested and next year electics will have to work too (even if you don't use it gents!) i wouldn't fit a diy towbar they can be picked up cheap enough - if you can find a westy one it lets you remove the bumper mounts and the bumper fastens direct to the towbar - looks nice and neat. This is a little link to when i fitted mine off my you tube

  6. Right then I'm going back to the camping shop today and I may come Back with a trailer tent . I must be mad all this money on the bus then this .
I think it's a good idea it's just a mobile awning really but with a lot more space and if the bus is off the road for any reason I can still tow it with the wife's golf so we won't have to miss camping trips

  7. sounds cool baybug ive just bought a tent as im tryin to sell my van so we can still go camping but take are golf lol , hope u get yr trailer tent :)

  11. if you've reworked the rear chassis rails and you're confident that your welding is up to standard, you haven't done a botch job and that the rear rails are structurally sound then there should be no issue.

If you're not a good welder/aren't confident that what you've done is up to scratch then get some one who is to check it all out - until then stay off the road with a trailer - the last thing anyone wants is to have their lives taken away by a half tonne trailer veering into their path!

Factory trailer mounts use captive nuts welded to the inside of the chassis rails, or they use the bumper mounts, which have the same and use very sturdy bolts.

If you haven't got this then forget it
    ;D

  12. It looks really great, very spacious

  13. any chance of more pics or a link to the product ?

Iv been thinking about a teardrop trailer but I'm still not sure as iv never towed anything before

that looks a beast! can't wait for a pic of it at a distance next to your bus for a bit of scale, now stop posting and get out and camp!.

  15. Cheers guys , mine rear rails will be fine I'm also going to fish tale plate them for more strength ( well that's what I call the plates ) as for the bumper holes the tow bar is not being fitted that way , I've found one that sits inside the rails and goes under the bumper.

Will find out the pics and the make , sore I've got it some were .
Just ordered a tow bar for are golf :)

  18. Have you got a towbar? I've got one languishing in the shed at the moment that you can have if you'd be willing to weld up the holes in that new engine lid I still haven't got round to fitting yet? It's not a westy but it's the type that mounts to the inside of the chassis rails, is that what you were looking for?
