Funnily enough it was him that suggested it. His rationale was all about absorbing condensation into the (mineral) oil rather than it sitting on metal parts. Synthetic oils are plainly very good, I don't pretend to know the answer, I am sure someone will be along in a mo with chapter and verse... Take care, Matt
I could but you’ve obviously made your decision so I won’t waste my time, however, for the benefit of others I’ll just say that a monograde hypoid gear oil with (or without) an additive such as Slick 50 is not the best lubricant for the VW transaxle.

I couldn't get an not-hardened bolt head to turn the drain plug on our bay. So bought a set of Draper oil drain plug tools from eBay. They're properly hardened and got the plug out with very little effort. As for oil, I replaced whatever was in there with Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle (GL4) from Opie Oils. The difference was noticeable: less whine in fourth and easier gear changing all round.
I had to use an 18" breaker bar on mine to get it to shift first time. One of those things where you heave hard then punch the ground with your knuckles.
Vw instruction manual says. Hypoid oil marked gl4 or oils which fulfil mil-L-2015 spec sae 80 or 90. So qxl gl5 is mil l 2015. Thats the one for me when i eventually remove plugs. Draper socket arrived today.
I’ve never heard of 'qxl gl5' and Google doesn’t find it so I’ll just say that if it’s a GL-5 oil it’s not the best for a VW Transaxle, however, it would probably be suitable for the final drive if you have an auto transmission. Are you somewhere with a limited choice of lubricants?
Sorry it is triple qx and is available at euro car parts. Info on oil from vw transporter instruction manual page 41. Its in the care and maintenance section. It says gl4 according to the api system or oils which fulfil Mi-L-2015 spec sae 80 or 80 w-90. It does not say 75w. You seem intent on being right and extracting the urine.
TRIPLE QX EP 80w90 is a GL-5 oil, VW recommended a GL-4. Note the spec MIL-L2105D; it’s not the same as MIL-L2105. A GL-5 will work but may or may not reduce the life of the synchro rings. 75w-90 has a wider operating range compared to 80w-90. There are plenty of oils that are better than TRIPLE QX but if you think I’m wrong that’s fine. I had no intention of extracting the urine but you replied to an old post of mine suggesting oil that I had never heard of was suitable and I responded. If you don’t want me to reply don’t quote me.
Thanks for the info and your apology. I will go the 75 90 route. Triple qx will be sold to highest bidder.
