'79 Bay Gearbox Allen Keys

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Matt C., Feb 3, 2017.

  1. I have decided that it is time to change the gearbox oil in my Bay.
I have the oil and after a quick inspection I found the fill plug it is a very large allen key.
I will need to buy a socket tool, can someone tell me what size it is please?
I will look for the drain plug in due course when I have it warm and on axle stands.
    Any other tips most welcome.

    Take care, Matt

  2. Make sure you can undo the fill plug before you remove the drain plug!

    I can’t resist – what oil?:)

  5. Noooooooo!

The plugs take a 17mm hex key as above. The JK one is fine.

Both drain and fill are the same size.

Make sure you have the key squarely in with a longish socket handle. The plugs are tapered thread and can be very tight. Sometimes a PO may have resorted to chewiing the outside with Mole grips instead.

Top end SAE80 Hypoid with a smidge of Slick 50 gear stuff
Worked a treat in my last Bay

  8. Castrol Syntrans 75/80.

  9. You can get into trouble at the airport security with one of those Allen Keys in your bag.
Just try explaining what it is to an ignorant security person, like I had to.

Interesting choice that. I went mineral rather than synthetic.
Way back before the war I worked with an Ex AC cars gearbox designer.
He had forgotten more about the inside of a gearbox than I would ever know.
He was very much of the opinion that you stayed with the oil the box was designed for....
I don't know the answer, but he was quite animated about such things, Heh??

  11. I think maybe things have changed since before the war ;)

I found Syntrans fine. It's GL4, and the box doesn't baulk even when the oil's cold.

VW recommended GL-4 SAE 80W-90 but if a monograde oil with Slick 50 works for you…
You’re ex AC cars gearbox designer would probably approve of Castrol Syntrans Transaxle 75W-90, it meets the required specs, what would he think of your homebrew?:)

  13. And whilst on this topic beware of overzealous security on ferries when it comes to the kitchen knives in your camper.

  15. I can vouch for that, when asked if there was anything on board that could be used as a weapon I replied "do you want them stabbed, beaten to death or strangled, " I had to explain it was a campervan and certain things were indeed needed. I went on board without losing anything.

  16. That box could do with a lick of paint. Gold would be nice ;)

  18. I got another 25hp simply by painting my box gold and my ignition coil blue

  19. I knew I shouldn't have painted that coil black! Wasted power there......

  20. The amount of things I've painted I should have over 500bhp
