78 Holdworth

  1. This is our 78 Holdsworth conversion. We bought it about 18 months ago and I spent ages attempting to identify the conversion type. It looked a bit like a Devon but someone on the Devon Interior Camper Society facebook page posted some pics of a Holdsworth Layout 2 conversion - then it made sense! Following this I found the Holdsworth Owners Club who confirmed it was an original conversion and possibly one of only a handful of "almost" complete examples left. I am planning to restore the interior which is fully functioning and just needs some TLC plus some sympathetic repairs to existing bodges! It would be great to hear if anyone else on the forum has a similar van and can share any interior pics - even better if anyone has and spare bits!

Have you got the pics of the Holdsworth layout 2 for us to have a compare?

  4. There may be more than one type but the two Holdsworth interiors I've had the units weren't laid out as separates they were along the drivers side. No expert but id have said that was Devon! That said the roof extends further back on a Holdsworth (like Simons roof).

perhaps this one does but cant see the rear of it from pics.

Here is a pic of a page from David Eccles book on vw conversions. The holdworth club also confirmed they believe it’s a layout 2 but they had only seen one other. I don’t have the boot lid badge on mine… but I’m not even sure if it’s the original boot lid anyway. I haven’t checked yet but apparently the front spare wheel bracket was a unique design.

  6. It’s a weathershield roof and extends quite a way back.

I had a layout very similar to that in one of my vans but thought mine was a Devon. Has yours got a cool box fridge?

That looks like a pre 1974 Devon wood-not-weetabix interior and the aero grade pressed aluminium poptop looks identical to my 1975 Devon.
    Hmmm.
