  4. Thanks, it's getting better but a long way to go. I'm enjoying the rolling restoration though rather than a full blown 3 years off the road job as I normally do.

  5. Well I've driven past your house 20000000000 times and I've often noticed a split and recently a porsche , I often have a peek to see what you may have in the drive!

now i Know ! nice thread

  6. Dude - stop by next time you see a car on the drive! Unless it's a Prius or a Mini as that'll be the missus having a PTA meeting..

  7. I shall ! spending most of my spare time on my westy rusto to resto but im literally down the road , my childhood house is just the otherside of the victory field !!

  8. Well I'm on the road and finally enjoying the Swedish Westy Kombi clone. Action will be my st camping trip.

I'm glad I persisted with the FI despite advice to change it out, others who have stuck with it will appreciate the delights of starting first turn of the key, no backfiring and smooth acceleration. This is the whole reason I bought this late bay in the first place and now finally it's all coming into place.

I know it's not a restoration as such but compare the pic above with this

I'm really pleased with the way it's working out, but a long way to go yet.

  11. 434 miles from Thursday to Sunday, easy cruising at 70 with plenty more to go and averaged 23 mpg. I think this can be improved upon with better timing and adjusting the valves and covering off any remaining air leaks.

  12. A late summer update of some small progress on the Swede. I always feel inadequate when I look at others restoration threads but it does give an immense sense of satisfaction to make some small headway.

First up my neighbour has kindly given me use of one of his barns so Swede has a home now.

I'm working my way through the engine, cleaning, fixing and getting to know the FI system better and better. Some tin ware with OG markings cleaned up nicely

I removed the LH heat exchanger as it had not been fit with the tinware for the fan hose and there was no way to fit it in situ. I gave it a quick blast with some Por15 manifold spray for no particular reason other than to make it look nice for a few hundred miles.

These are a bugger to fit, particularly getting the copper rings to stay put as the manifold goes up into the head. A bit of exhaust paste did the trick. The exhaust is now quieter as I think it has a better seal now.

  13. A kindly person on this forum replied to my wanted ad for green headrests and so I managed to pick up a pair of green westy seats. The drivers one is in good condition and once I swiped over the seat bases went in and looks great.

The passenger side I could only use the headrest as the seat is a full backed one and mine has the bulkhead. Also the seat was in poor condition but I may be able to rescue the cover as a winter project.

I love the look of the cab area now with the green seat.

  14. Next up was to drill a big hole in the floor for the Vanwurks table. In hindsight I wish I had kept hold of the swing out table I had from my old Continental kit as the Vanwurks layout is not ideal as I discovered you can't really use the cooker with the table up so you have no prep area. It's also hard to sit in at the table at the back ( on the gas box) but that's life in a VW camper I guess.

In my quest for a perfect running FI car I found this small split which I have taped up for now, I need to find a replacement boot for the proper fix.

Splits and cracks like these mean the engine will not run properly, or in the case of the split on the S boot, idle at all. It's actually very basic but with all of these cracks and splits replaced or repaired my Swede now runs and idles perfectly.

  16. My wife is not a fan of patina, end of. So, in my quest for a long and happy life I succumbed and decided to paint the bumpers. At some point in time the Swede was hit in the rear quarter which impacted the bumper into the rear quarter. I removed the bumper and straightened the hanger. The rear quarter was one of the few parts I didn't get Russ to do but I've now booked in to get that and the front panel sorted during the winter.

For now the hanger and tow bar mount are straight and painted and the bumper is painted but still has it's dents and dings.

Hmm, that don't look straight! I think I'll lay off the coors next time I fit things onto the Swede

    Next, onto the front

I then spent some time on the dash - I replaced the dash speaker with a new spare speaker I had lying around. I also put in my Frankfurt temporarily as this needs to go back into my 912. It amazes me what a great sound you get from these old radios and my iPhone plugs right into the back so I have hands free in the car and can play music.

I'm trying to find a good way to get the black plastic back to black. The ash tray for example is a brownish colour. I've tried some recommendations like wd40 but haven't found anything that works yet.

  17. I replaced the horrible toggle switch for the front fogs with an OG switch.

I need to sort the other two (rear fog and heater fan)

I stuck the old BA6 heater control back in because it's cool - I'll be fitting a propex for now. I just noticed there is some paint I need to clean up there too.

I love the way the Swede is all on one key.

That about brings it up to date. Action was good, a kindly chap in a sage green westy saved the day and sold me the window covers so I had a great night on the full double bed.

That brings it all up to date now. As Monty says, jobs for the weekend..

Sort and install switch for heated rear screen
    Install propex
    Install kick panel light
Investigate sliding door lock which is broken / inoperative

    Over and out.

  18. Try 'bumper black', that should do the trick!
