Sorry to hear that the engine needs stripping before you have even run it Fingers crossed its not too bad
Found lots of swarf in the heads and barrels when I stripped it to send you the heads (bloody luck there). Was going to just strip, clean and re-assemble but have been advised by those that know more than me to check everything on the re-build as it could be all off
Thats terrible and certainly not what you expect when you pay a so called expert to build you an engine Fingers crossed the machining and build has been done properly and its only swarf to clean out
I'll let you know what I find when I strip the other 1776 in a few weeks time. Maybe not so bad, fingers crossed.
Well @Paul Weeding has my long block for checking and he has taken it apart. Not too bad except for the crap cam. The bearing faces were fubard and in just hand turning the engine has buggered the new bearings (if they were new!) One of the rod end caps looks discoloured as if it got a bit hot
I found only a few flakes (around 4) of aluminium from the line bore, all were within the pressure relief valves... But the general cleanliness of the case is pretty poor... it'll be getting a full degrease and acid clean before it goes back together The cam bearings have all been scuffed from the bearing surfaces on the cam... The cam is in a very poor condition... lobe wise it's ok, but bearing surfaces are just bad!! The rod looks to be from an engine that has spun a big end, the whole of the big end is black, and the beam part of the rod has gone rusty.. so I'd say that the rod has been weakened, and at the very least, the rod bolts will be unsafe!! Other than that, the engine appears to be ok
I'm glad too, but I'd split all the big ends and have a look for that ovalled wear pattern on the rods and caps if you haven't already, He'd clearly hand sanded them off mine but the ends were oval, was obvious from the bearing shells I took out when I deconstructed it. And check all the crank journals, again mine should have had a regrind on the mains which was not done. @Paul Weeding - had he removed the gallery plugs after machining the case/ full flowing? He hadn't on mine and I pulled long curly swarf from the gallery leading to the centre cam bearing.
Well went for MOT this morning and passed with flying colours. Paul is just waiting for the Engle W100 kit to finish building my long block and this arrived today...... Yum yum!
I've dug out a good set of rods to replace the lot if they're not any good!! I've not looked at the big ends yet, I'm snowed with engines at the moment, but I'm not too far off putting the crank on the bench to strip the rods off and check them over properly!! As for the case shuffling, that's a good spot... I was looking for other abnormalities!! Might be an idea to shuffle pin the case while it's in pieces
