65 Split - mixing it up a bit

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by Paul Weeding, Oct 11, 2012.

  1. So this is Andys splitty... Picked her up this afternoon even though she initially refused to start... battery was dead dead, and the tank was dry as a bone

 I guess she was happy where she was

So she's in for a few bits n bobs... some mechanical stuff, paint/rust issues, and a general good going over!!

Gets a 10 out of 10.... That's looks good at 10 paces in low light ;)

Then you get up close and have a good look

    Awning rail

    Rear vent
    [IMG]

Drivers door fit is shocking!!

Rear valance needs some work too
    [IMG]

So a few bits to do

  6. Just got to work out what the paint colours are now

  7. very nice :)

  8. very nice but i must admite it like bays better , i had a 67 split my self , hope ye have deep pockets owen nw 8)

  9. Customers van... so I don't need to worry about my pockets ;)

TBH I would never own a split... I just don't like how small they are inside compared to a bay!!

  10. must agree with u 100 % bays are best owen nw 8) ;) :hattip:

  11. Still waiting on the new exhaust getting here (apparently the guy has been away on holiday) but it should've been shipped out today

So I decided to get cracking on it today...

    Rear valance out...

You can see where the header has cooked the valance... hence the rippled finish on the outside!!

This is going for something a lot better, and stainless ;)

You can see how tight it is in this pic
    [IMG]

Quick clean up with the strip disc shows someones idea of fixing ;)

Rust coming through on the seal slot
    [IMG]

Inner section starting to go to rot too
    [IMG]

Cleaned up the side seam... pretty much rust free considering the bubbling...

There's a lot of paint on the van, so it'd started to crack in the seam, so I cleaned it all out, and dropped a bit of acid primer on to keep it covered!!

New engine lid seal, and tin out ready for the exhaust to come off
    [IMG]

Pulled the bumpers - looking interesting

    No primer   Enamel??

Had a fiddle with the shutting of the drivers door... got that pretty much sorted!!
Just needs the door shuts repainting now

    Front bumper off too
    [IMG]

    That's it for today

Oh, I got the paint for it too... looks like it was a good job that I didn't guess the white, as it's got a green tinge too it

At a guess it looks like Blue/white top and Sea Blue #2 bottom - hopefully the colour I'm going for, but going to test a panel 1st.

  14. You guys

I think I'll have to see about getting some original colour chits.. Will make my life a little easier for stock colour matching

  15. So the new exhaust I ordered turned up today...

Old one off... that's one big hole

Just spot that the old gaskets were starting to blow!!

    Uh-oh
    [IMG]

Quick test fit  something ain't right here...

Quick phone call to the seller confirms that the Vintage speed exhaust isn't... It's a copy
Not too impressed with that as it was being sold as a VS, but to give the seller some credit he's offered a full refund, no quibble!!

So I pulled the exchanger off
    [IMG]

Dug a bit of thick wall tube out, and chucked it in the lathe... skimmed out the inside, and reduced it on one end so I could hammer it into the exchanger!!
welded it in, job done

Just got to sort another exhaust now
    !@*# happens :)

  18. So after bouncing a few emails between myself and the guy who I got the exhaust from, he offered me a nice rebate on the purchase price of the exhaust, and left me to it to modify the fitment of the exhaust!!

So after tweaking the angle of the muffler on the heat exchangers, I fired up the grinder and set about modifying the pipes to cylinders 2&4

Notched the back of the muffler to clear the rear tin
    [IMG]

    Looking good now

    Good clearance there now

I also got all new fuel lines on it today... old ones had gone hard, so good time to do it!! 8)
