Has anyone tried fitting 27x8.5R14 tyres to stock bay steels ?

    If so..
Do they fit in the front & rear arches / wheel wells OK ?
Do they affect steering lock ?

Thinking of taking the plunge but wanted to see if anyone else has tried this setup already.

  2. Standard wheels are 25" dia x 7.25" wide, you need to do some measuring. 8.5" is a bit too wide for the standard 5.5" rim which is 7.75" max although the higher profile helps with that a bit. But unless you have a lower ratio diff the tyres would increase the final drive ratio and you would loose a lot of power. Why do you want them apart from looks?

Just ripped this image off from the Samba

A crossover crewie running 27x8.5R14 on stock steelies.

No other technical info but it in my opinion it does ‘look’ nice.

Just wondered if anyone on here was running anything similar ?

  5. Don't think they are standard wheel look more like 6" Syncro wheels.
I do go down muddy tracks, I just use normal size AT tyres. Dscn2256.jpg

Gonna have to get under him with a tape measure but it looks a distinct possibility.

I'm planning on changing my tyres for 195/80/14 Insa Turbo Dakar Mud Terrains this winter.

    A little teaser..

I’ve had to stop for 3 reasons :

    1. I’ve realised my jack is old and not man enough. Need to buy or borrow a decent jack for this job.

    2. The drum and the big hub nut look naff and need a light dusting with paint.

    3. It’s blinkin raining again :(

Let me get a front wheel / tyre on first ;)
I think it’s going to be a tighter fit up front.
Loads of space in the rear though.

I’ll keep the road wheels / tyres just in case.

Happy to report that the tyres fit the front too..

Just got to turn it round and do the other side and then see what it drives like.

Hopefully get some better photos next weekend as the weather looks better.

I wanted to retain stock bay 14” steel wheels.

The suspension is completely stock too.

    The tyres are 27 x 8.5 x R14 MT764 Maxxis Bighorns.

They’re a mud & snow tyre with a good load rating.

They come stock with white raised lettering - which I’m not sure about but will live with for the moment.

Can’t comment what they drive like yet.
