2 litre automatic - mileage per tank

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Ukjoncollins, Oct 19, 2021.

  1. Hello chaps,

Just wondered how many miles I should expect to get from one tank of fuel on a 2 litre dual carb setup with auto box? The gauge appears to be broken and I'd been working to 150 miles per tank, but that would appear to be drastically wrong if the mechanic is correct...

    Many thanks,
    Jon

It’s not crazy out of the way , I think 200 to a tank on an auto would be very good

  3. Ours 2.0 ltr auto twin 40 Webers. Get 20-22mpg. Usually refill after about 150 miles only to the 1st click of the pump so not brimmed. Usually still 2-3 gallons in tank so range about 200mls to a tank.

Around the 20mpg mark is about right....

  5. Fill it up, note the mileage.
    Drive it 150-180 miles.
Fill it up, note litres used, note the mileage.
Then you can work out how miles per litre & how often you need to fill up.
    Report back here!

  6. Ok then… well I’ve done around 70-80 miles on the full tank - need to double check this when I pick the bus up this afternoon. Certainly no more than 100. Had a fuel starvation issue on Sunday and had to get recovered by AA. The air cooled mechanic is convinced (although he’s not drained the tank…) that it’s just a faulty gauge and hasn’t enough in the tank going up hill. I wouldn’t completely rule it out but i would have expected a few more miles in it before this. Certainly not ruling out the gauge is wrong. But yeah, brand new engine and dual Webber carbs getting around 22mpg when I worked it out last time…

not convinced mechanic i would think it would have to be down to fumes for that to happen

Something floating around in your tank and periodically blocking the outlet?

  9. This is what I think too… bit of perished rubber from when I changed the fuel filler pipes.

  10. Well it took 27-28 litres of fuel when I topped it up just now. Prior to that I had put 5 litres from a jerry can in. The mechanic drove it a bit, serviced the engine, etc... so it's hard to make a call on it but it sounds like he's probably right! Just a bit weird only getting 70 miles out of a tank of fuel...

  11. There is no way you only get 70 miles from a full tank.

Whatever caused your breakdown, it wasn't lack of fuel.....unless you have a massive leak.

You will get at least 180miles from a full tank, even if driving it hard & fast.

Just been looking at my holiday mileage and fuel usage.
The run down to Henley-on-Thames with a bit of running around whilst there returned an estimated 25 mpg.

    That’s about half a tank.

My vote based on recent experience was a semi-blocked fuel filter causing fuel starvation.
Or the floating label blocking the tank outlet is quite common, following fitting a new sender.
Or if a fuel pump had failed and pressure due to gravity was adequate to feed the engine at first, until the tank level had dropped to nearer the carburettor float bowl's level.

Where’s the brand new engine from and who’s your mechanic.

Fill it up. Do 200 miles. Fill up again and see how many litres it takes. It’s a 55L tank so if you put 40L in you know you probably can do 250 miles on the tank.

You just need to gauge it depending on how many miles you do and how much fuel it takes to fill up.

  16. Ah, seems that it must have something floating in it. I'll get it booked in to have him take it out and clean! I hadn't realised it was a 55l tank. For some reason I thought it was 35l. It's definitely none of the other components though as the pump has just been rebuilt and everything else is brand new!

New doesn't necessarily equate to "works".
