FOR SALE 1975 Californian Westy - NOW SOLD

Discussion in 'Late Bay Classifieds' started by Omias, Jun 4, 2014.

  1. It took me twenty years to find the right bus for me and I am absolutely gutted to be selling her.

Built in Sept. 1974, sold to her first owners on 2/6/1975. As she was built for the Californian market she has always run on unleaded fuel, and is powered by a 1700cc Fuel Injected Type 4 Engine. She stayed in California until 2011 when she was imported to the UK. Being Californian she is a ‘dry state’ bus, is rust free throughout and obviously left hand drive! Taxed and Tested until October, she passed her last MOT with no advisory's and is showing 69022 miles at the moment.

She has had two registered UK keepers before us, one I believe was the importer, and the second a VW enthusiast who repainted her up to the guttering, replaced the fuel injection feed pipes, replaced the pop-top canvas and fitted a 12v Waeco fridge freezer into the original Westfalia unit.

She still sports her original orange cloth Westfalia interior complete with sink/water tank, table, stool, new cooker and fridge unit, full width rock ‘n’ roll bed, double bunk in the pop top and hammock to go across the front seats with only the modern hook up unit fitted into the cupboard detracting from the original look. I have purposely left the original westy US hook up in place both inside and out. She is so original in fact that all the locks fit the original key!!

We have only owned Betty for a year and in that time we have carried out the following work to make Betty a reliable family bus. We have replaced all 5 tyres, replaced the rear seat belts for our children, replaced the engine battery and battery terminal clamps, fitted a battery tray in N/S of engine bay for one leisure battery, fitted another battery tray in the spare wheel well for a second leisure battery (giving 220Ah total), made a false cupboard bottom to enclose the battery, fitted mains hook up with two sockets and 18 Amp charger, replaced the front gear linkage bush, replaced both fuel filler rubber hoses, replaced the fuel return hose, replaced fuel the vapour hoses, replaced engine vacuum hoses, fitted a two ring and grill gas cooker into original Westfalia unit, replaced interior lights, had a full service a month ago including oil & filter, plugs, leads, points, condenser, cap, arm, valve gaps and timing, replaced water tap switch with a push button and fitted new 12v outlets in the rear seat and dashboard.

Included in the sale will be the Awning, a set of roof bars, and a steering wheel lock to keep her safe.

We have had some great times in Betty, and we all love her dearly, but we need to sell as an old motorcycling injury is making it more and more difficult for me to drive her any great distance. Our last trip was half term where Betty took us to West Wales for 10 days and covered 400 miles without issue returning 26 mpg even with some tough hill climbs!

Betty is a great solid bus that will serve anybody well, I really do wish I could keep her but I know that my injuries are not going to get any less intrusive and she will only get used less and less which would be a terrible shame.

I'm open to offers in the region of £17k baring in mind she's no trailered show winning beauty queen but she is solid and useable and polishes up a treat!
Please PM me if interested or want more pictures.

  8. Looks like she is worth every penny lovely bus

  9. No worries dude, I'm not shy about it!
I severed part of my brachial plexus in a bike crash which has left me with limited shoulder movement on my right side. Steering is fine it's the action of changing gear that gives me trouble, I'm fine for a while then what's left of the deltoid muscle gets tired and other muscles try to help out which ends up in me sobbing into my cider.
Gutted as I hoped to be able to enjoy Betty for at least 5 yrs or more as the kids grew up as they both love her.

  13. Sorry to hear about your condition and the need to sell your van, good luck. A friend of mine drives a car and has one arm missing and the other is just above the elbow, its a series 5 bmw auto with a special adaption. He steers with his left foot in a plate on the floor and his right foot does the brake and the gas, his short arm reaches a adapted switch panel on the door for lights etc. Nothing is impossible. Best wishes mate.
