FOR SALE 1974 Fully restored Bay - Pop-top Devon Conversion - Brilliant Orange/Pastel White - Immaculate

Discussion in 'Late Bay Classifieds' started by Nevil Phillips, May 29, 2013.

  1. We are very reluctantly selling our Type-2 Bay Fronted VW camper van, first registered on 4th September 1974. The sale is prompted simply by the fact that, with three very active children, we simply do not get to use the vehicle enough to warrant keeping it.

It has approximately 76,000 miles on the clock from new, and we are only the fourth owners from its original purchase. We have had the van since September 2007. It is in absolutely first class condition. It has been re-sprayed since new, but keeps the original Brilliant Orange/Pastel White colourway. Images are shown below.

It is an original Devon Conversion with a white pop-top. The front and rear cabins communicate via a walkway, meaning that you can easily move from one to the other without needing to exit the vehicle.

We had the interior gutted 3 years ago and new units, table, seating, upholstery, fittings, floorings, door cards, engine cover, shelving, closed cupboarding, closed storage, and soft furnishings installed professionally by the Camper Shak in Cheshire.

The interior colour scheme is cream piped upholstery, with beige curtaining (with orange check detail to pick up the external colourway), matching bolsters and throw cushions, and beige carpeting door cards. There is a new electric Camping Gaz fridge, gas hob and grill, basin with electric pump and water reservoir, and interior LED ambient lighting. The floor covering in the front cab has also been replaced.

The rear cabin includes a 3/4 rock-and-roll bed (which sleeps two), plus the two original hammock beds which fold out once the roof is popped up. There is also a front-cab child hammock which can be erected over the driver and passenger seats in the front. Thus, the vehicle can, in theory, sleep 5 people without the need for external awnings. There is a removable dining table and fold-down stool for additional seating.

It is equipped with a second, leisure battery (which charges while the vehicle is running, but which can be used to power the internal fittings without depleting the charge on the main, starting battery). However, it also has a mains hook-up facility, so that you can connect to a mains supply at camp sites or at home. Internally, the vehicle is equipped with 3-pin plug sockets where a mains hook-up is possible, together with 12 volt sockets where the leisure battery is being used as the main power source. It also has a Panasonic CD-radio unit with iPod connection, front and rear speakers, and remote control.

The vehicle has the original 1795 cc engine and disc brakes, but has new carburettor and electronic ignition systems. It was maintained from September 2007 until 2012 by Cares of Crowborough, and since then by Sussex Kampers of Dallington – all professional VW mechanics specialising in classic vehicles. It has also been fitted with the Litesteer electronic power-steering unit, which means that it is a very easy vehicle to drive. It runs on standard unleaded fuel. It also has a roof rack over the front cab, and front-mounted spare wheel (with classic VW cover in orange and white to match the exterior). It is also fully fitted with seat belts to the driver and all passenger seats (including the rear bench seat – two inertia belts and one lap belt).

Annual running costs are minimal – road tax is a little over £200; MOT (which it has never failed) is about £50; insurance and breakdown cover is about £280.

The current MOT does not expire until 31st August 2013.

The vehicle has (when not in use) been stored for the last 6 years in a heated garage. Prior to that, as far as we are aware, it was always dry-stored (again, when not in use) from new. Thus, other than some very very minor surface corrosion in way of the weld seam at the upper rear offside quarter, it is immaculate.

The van really is a stunner, and we have already had offers for the vehicle at the £24,000 level (at which it has been independently valued) from parents at the children’s school, but we are reluctant to sell locally because the children (who are very attached to the vehicle) will be upset if they keep seeing others that they know driving around in it.

In light of this, we are inviting offers in the region of £24,000.

    Lovely looking van.
Having been keenly watching the classifieds recently (and the downward spiralling prices) if you've been offered £24k I'd snap their hands off.
PS, can you pass my details onto the school-run mums please?
    :)

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Bright and breezy interior, but for £24K I'd expect perfection not a long dent and rust stain on the rear arch panel and badly fitting cab door. ;)
    Try £14K.
    Welcome to TLB BTW.

  7. TWENTY FOUR THOUSAND POUNDS???? The kids will get over it, get back round and get those parent's cash! It's a lovely bus, but you'll struggle to get over £16k I'd say.

  8. Good luck with the sale!

  9. My thanks to all who have responded to the post so far, especially to those offering their compliments on the van and their good wishes for a successful sale. That is much appreciated.

The price is simply that which I was advised to post by a local camper specialist and nut (who has worked with nothing else for 20 years, and who has worked on the van and viewed it in detail). It is not writ in stone. So, I shall be very interested to see what happens. If it does not sell at that price, hopefully it will still fetch something which reflects the pleasure and fun which it has brought us over the last 6 years. I appreciate the opinions and guidance, anyway.

    Take care.

No offence but I'd question a specialist or nut who values any bus at £24k.
Yours is undoubtably nice but an absolute minter won't get near £24k at the moment...

So, how much did it go for then?

  12. The wooden panel below the R&R appears to be a different colour to the rest of the units fitted. Is this the case? Please post up pics of the underneath of the camper and the engine bay too. Thank you.

  13. Really nice interior, it looks just like a moonraker copy and is exactly what I'm after.
What did it cost and do you have a contact for the company?

    Good luck with the sale.

  14. Sorry for not responding to the earlier posts. I have been away on business for a month or so.

The van is now sold (£20,500).

Chrisselby: the interior was by Mike and Diane at The Camper Shak in Burscough, Cheshire (http://www.thecampershak.co.uk/). It was done back in January 2008, at a cost of about £3,500 (from recollection), inclusive of mains hook-up, 12v circuit and charging ports, stereo speakers, lighting, leisure battery circuit, Zig gauge, hob/grill, electric fridge, sink, and water pump.
