1973 Westfalia roof Toggles

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by simon, May 27, 2020.

  1. Can somebody put up a picture of their roof toggles that hold down the roof onto the body, This was a one year only arrangement. The roof has three toggles in total, one at the rear and two on the sides. I just want to make sure, when I re-fit mine they are going on the right way. Thanks in advance.

  2. Still need those pictures?

Our 73 Westy (built September 72 I think )has only 2 roof toggles, one on each side about half way down the roof. I checked and can't find or see any holes for a third toggle on the short side. I'm away from home just now so can't take pictures.

  4. My 73 built in May has the catch for third one at the rear but the toggle has gone - must get it replaced

  5. My 72 build 73 registered westy has the 3 toggles but is currently having some resto done if you still need pics in 2 weeks when I get it back I can send them?

    Hope that helps.

I replaced these many years ago. At the time they only made black ones which rubbed off everywhere and left my hands black too.
I did find grey ones eventually.
These didn’t have holes for the pins so I bodged them. They’re a bit loose as you can see but haven’t had any self-raising roof issues yet!

If you need more close-ups let me know and I’ll pop out later after I’ve finished work.

  7. Same construction in our 1972 late bay with prototype bay Westfalia roof over here.
Where did you buy the grey replacements if I may ask?

Honestly I can’t recall - it was 10 years ago I reckon. The grey ones didn’t have holes through the ball section.
I’ll have a look in my spares box, I’ve probably got the original ones in a Jiffy bag that the grey ones came in.
I thought NLA VW might stock them as they are good for Westy parts but can’t see them in the catalogue. Haven’t looked on their website.

Check if they have holes in them now...

My bus has pins attaching lever-type hook things that clip into bars on the interior roof frame. Older ones had cut-out cups like the ones on the bed base that the ball slotted into hence they didn’t have holes through the ball. Looking at the packet the grey ones were for splits.

  16. I put yellow JK ones on mine - they are not really flexible enough, so don't hold on the catch properly .

  17. Good to know, thanks!

  18. They seem to be still without the holes through the ball, however, they might be the better choice.
