1973 US Import named Punkin and my trailer named Pie

Discussion in 'Show Us Your Ride' started by DUBious, Aug 10, 2011.

  1. Well, done this once before, but this does give me a chance to tidy it up a little, so, without further ado, here is my 1973 Westfalia campervan that I have imported from the USA, I purchased came across it on the Samba website back in November 2010, after a month of haggling we agreed on a price, it finally arrived here in the UK in Feb and arrived at my door on Febuary 10th 2011. (for details on importing, please see the "How to import a bus from the USA" thread that I will be doing soon.)
So, here are the pictures that got my interest.

  6. [IMG]
    EGR pump clearly not working
    [IMG]
Time to replace those perished window rubbers : I purchased some Vactan which is a chemical compound that reverses rust, it revereses it somehow and stops it getting any worse as a minimum. I also used Waxoyl as the lubricant to replace (grease the wheels) of the window rubbers, this serves dual purpose, lubricant and also then seals the seams under the rubber ;D considering the age of the vehicle and the originality, I was well pleased with the lack of rot / rust under what appear to be the original window rubbers.
I paid £99 for a set of 6 rubbers to replace them all, however I dod have to purchase additional "Westfalia" rubbers for the westy windows, and oh by god, they rip you a new arsehole with the price of those bad boys !

And finally, the day arrived when it was registered.............this in itself was a long long story as I was summoned to DLVA VOSA in Worcestershire for a full inspection, it's worth noting that at this point I was insured, MOT'd but had no license plate as it had not been issued, I contacted the local police and was told I could Legally drive to VOSA for the inspection, the copper I spoke with even gave me his PC number just in case I got pulled over on the day.

    CB Fitted
    [IMG]
First over riders fitted (though I later changed these )

  8. Didn't know you went with pie for the trailer :) I named that trailer :) :) :)

  9. The spring in the middle of the picture was knackered, this was causing poor accelerator return and high idle speed, so I visitied a spring company i know of in West Bromwich and they gave me a bunch of spares (if you need one I may be able to help)
Job for the future, paint the roof !
I brought a new stereo (Ripspeed DV725) not new, but free so new to me, it was a standard DIN size, however the hole in the dash was too small, so using a dremel I cut it out to accept the larger DIN bracket
    [IMG]

Wardrobe stripped out ready for new wiring to be traced for new speakers and DVD player and a whole host of other techy stuff
    [IMG]
I then also brought some "deluxe" headrests, I believe most seats accept these, to check, press your finger down on top, you are feeling for a cylindrical tube, it's about 1/2" below the seat top, if you find some, then your seats will house the headrests.
Decided to put the multi point 12v sockets into the leisure battery install, all this is housed under the RnR seat, I can take more pics at request and I'll help anyone with advice on this, I cut the holes using my trusty dremel and a repricating saw.

Now that is one hell of a sorted bus. Well done DUBious its awesome 8)

  12. Bumper removed ready to fit new towbar
    [IMG]
Tarted up the old bumper a bit and added a "deluxe" rubber, this came as a one piece item, so, I had to cut it to go around the over riders, I did this using (yes you guessed it) my trusty Dremel.
I used SS bolts and nylock nuts to fix it in place
    [IMG]
Pics later on showing it finished..............now for the fitting of the roof bed, I did have the single hammock, but after falling through this at BSO I decided to replace it with the continental westy roof bed, I brought an original one from Ilhu on here, the one he had used as a template for the new ones he makes I believe, it came with all fixings and some instructions, however I did things slightly different (tools wise)
Firstly, here is the bruise on my leg following the roof fall !
Brackets mounted equi distant from the ctr line of the inner roof cutout
    [IMG]
Fitting these 2 brackets is a right pain in the arse, it is however easier and possible to do without removal if you have a right angle head power screwdriver, I have a Bosch Ion and managed it without removal ;D

Deluxe rubber added to front bumper using same method as rear, this one was brand new though from JK
    [IMG]
Fitted an age appropriate clock, I at first thought it was the correct clock, but alas it was not, so I "made it fit" using,,,,, u guessed it, my dremel ;D here is the final pic as I will do a "how to" thread showing more detail.
Clocks added, but not yet wired in
    [IMG]
Please pass sign added, note I traced the wiring through the same holes as the heated rearview window

  18. where did you get the westy roof seal from? is it a good fit?

Is the stereo good? I just got one from ebay.

More to follow as I make the roof box using Flagbus's idea as a template (thanks for the advice Jarrod)

If it's not too much trouble I might be making it, then taking it apart and making templates so it can easily be reproduced... If anyone with a rear hinged Westy is interested let me know.
