1973 T2 project

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by lovedubs, Apr 23, 2020.

  1. We bought this bus back in 2018, it was on the road and being used daily by the previous owner.

We have enjoyed using the bus and it drives and pulls really well with its 1600 single port engine and bad boy exhaust, happy cruises at 60.

We decided to put it in for a pre-mot as we wanted to know if all well, sadly that was not the cause and found it had been badly repaired in numerous places, so we decided to take it of the road to try and fix it ourselves.

This is now our on-going project, so we hope to get it back up and running for use again next year.

    Journey So Far

We have removed the belly pans, inner, outer, middle, sills and jacking points.
We have repaired portions of the main beam and cross members, now tackling the sills and jacking points.

We are being to line panels up, which is not going to well, but think I am getting there now (pic attached)

We have come to a dead stop as not sure what parts are missing from the area where the B pilled meets the arch , we have the other panel with the L shape to cut in, but the inner part we were sent doesn’t look anything like what is there already. (See photo for attention)

Any pointers to what we are doing would be appreciated. We are learning as we go......

Looks like you're getting stuck in!
Which bit is it you are missing? There's some pics from about here onwards in my resto which may give you some reference: http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/a-restoration-for-iris.53455/page-36#post-1335293 (the other side of the van is slightly earlier in the thread).

Do you have B pillar repair panels (both inner and outer)? If the b pillar inner isn't too bad you can just fabricate a repair yourself.

Looks like you've got all the bits you need, although based on the picture above I'd say you didn't need a full B pillar repair (it'll certainly make it a better fit though as it's a genuine part).
The piece on the left is the inner part of the B pillar, if you lay the outer pillar over it you should be able to see how it would go together on the van to form the box shape of the pillar (it'll only go together one way).
The inner part is probably missing some of the pressings that the original had hence why it may not look quite the same.

  5. Awsome, thats good news.

What is the sequence of welding these pieces together. Am I correct in thinking inner sill / middle sill then outriggers

    I went:
    • Inner Sill
    • Outriggers (ends of the outrigger plug welded to the inner sill with the holes drilled in the sill. You could do it the other way round though with the holes drilled in the outrigger and plug weld from under the van. Access is a little easier the first way).
    • Middle Sill
    • B pillar
    • Outer Sill
    • Closing Panels in the tub.

Unless you`ve got a rough idea of how it all goes together you`re relying on guesswork .
This book will explain everything and plenty of pictures certainly helps , worth every penny

  20. Right guys, help needed again. Trying to line up middle sill, is this correct. ? Or should the box section over hang the end. CCEED542-2E46-409A-A124-226068EBFA66.jpeg
