1641 first time engine build

  1. Done some more bits and bobs. Crank is getting the gears pulled off the end, case has been sorted. Spent the weekend cleaning and painting a few bits. I am so so bored of cleaning int's untrue!

    Anyway, some pics....

After spending ages trying top unblock my heat risers I was starting to lose hope. I'd tried pouring all manner of chemicals down there, clutch cables, stiff wire in drills stuffed down there. You name it I tried it but it was proper blocked. I managed to clear up to the second bend on each side but then nothing. So I decided to drill a hole in the bend so I could have a better chance of clearing the middle bit of tube.

    Here is the hole:

Then I got some stiff wire in the drill and bosh, straight out and cleaned up. Should have done that to start with. Would have saved me loads of time! Then I cut a piece of steel from a bit of tube I had to make a patch:

Then welded it up. (not the neatest, but it its round the back ;) )

Then tarted up with a bit of paint :)

  2. Also, did some tin prep and painting....

All looks to be ok. Will lap the valves before I build it back up again.

  4. The job continues....

Was taking the rings off the pistons. They all came off fine until the very last one

Dammit! At least it means I'm forced into buying new rings, which is probably the sensible thing to do anyway!

Getting near the stage of starting to build the engine back up so have been trying to get myself organised. Who would have thought that a VW engine could take up so much space!!

I'm not sure I have ever cleaned so much oil and crud of anything before. I definitely underestimated the amount of work an engine rebuild takes. The plan is to get everything ordered this week ready to start assembling it all next week.

    Will keep you posted

  6. Great stuff, and good for the soul :). I'm currently disemboweling an old AD to build up a spare engine, and very soothing it is...

What do you use to clean your cases up with, Mr Weeding? Wire brush and elbow grease, or a blasting?

  7. Panel wipe and paint brush/tooth brush

Proper labor intensive... takes me a day to clean a block like that!!
I have bought myself a 2nd hand ultrasonic cleaning tank, but it needs a little bit of work before I have it up and running fully, so that'll take the brunt out of the cleaning!!

  9. I used degreaser, and a bucket load of elbow grease! What did help a shed load was a jet washer. That really helped, although you do tend to get drenched!

I'm not sure I find it that soothing Snotty......maybe its because I need it to be on the road by the end of the month. If it was my bus motor and I didn't need it til April I think I would be a lot more chilled about it!

  17. Panel wipe is cheaper... £10 per 5l

Paraffin is about £5/6 for 4l

Wurth brake cleaner is about £20 for 4/5l
