1600TP engine Hot and Cold

    I'd whip the engine out and take the heads off before you do any more damage!

    You cannot remove push rod tubes without pulling the heads off a T1.

    The large amount of blow by says you have have lost rings or holed a piston. This was probably due originally to an air leak making for too hot running. The receding valves also point at hot, and for a long time too.

    Give up on trying to get it running and get onto finding how much is damaged. Try and find somebody to help getting the engine out.

    - Don’t run the engine – if there is something wrong it won’t get better on its own.
    - Remove the spark plugs and post pics of each one and note which cylinder it came from.
    - With a fully charged battery carry out a compression test. Post the results.

  6. Remove the rocker on the offending side and put a straight edge across the valves, see if any have sunk, do this before setting tappets as you are going to do them anyway.

  7. ok I have removed the plugs. No. 2,3,4 all dry and a little black soot. No.1 very different, oily and smell of petrol.

    The rocker cover for 1 and 2 is removed. Can't see anything broken or falling apart.

    I have a metal ruler as a straight edge and a compression tester.

    Just got dark now so tomorrow I will carry on with it.

    Rocker shaft has 2 bolts to undo? then pull out? should I pull out the push rods as well to check them.

    Presumably the oily plug wasn't firing as there wasn't any blue smoke, exhaust tail pipe is sooty.

    Drop the oil and see how much metal is in it , stop running it now you know you've got a problem on 1,

    I wouldn’t bother with taking the rockers apart. Do the compression test first, if there is little or no compression on No. 1 then look at the rockers but the chances are you’ll need to take the head off to investigate. My guess is that at least No.1 piston is damaged, if it were just a valve problem you wouldn’t get a pressurised crankcase.
     
  10. I changed the oil last week, the old oil had some glitter, but its always had some particles since I've owned it.

    There’s only so much grinding paste an engine can ingest before it says enough is enough. You’ve probably reached that point.

    Wouldn’t pressurise the crankcase unless the valves weren’t closing either.
     
  15. It would on the exhaust guides.when valve is open.
     
  16. You can remove push rod tubes ,but have to replace with spring loadeds or adjustables.
     
  17. Unless you've got new barrels/pistons, there should be no "glitter" in your oil...

  18. I agree, metal particles in oil are trying to tell us something. Soon going to find out what that something is.

    Will do the compressions and see what they say.

  20. I will try it tomorrow, next test is the compressions, looking at no 1 spark plug, oily and petroly, the others are all good, points already to no 1 cylinder.

    As that side was cold after running for 10 minutes and the other side was very hot, that does suggest little or no firing was taking place on the cold side. I will post the cylinder compressions for comment when I have done them.
