Sorry, I've done a search but can't find anything, although I'm sure it's been mentioned before on TLB

On a type 4 engine there are a couple of plates that fit directly under the cylinders, above the pushrod tubes. They are held on by 3 bolts each, one of which goes into the bottom of the head. I know it's a bit of an unusual thread, that one... and I'm missing one.

Not having a thread gauge to measure the one I do have, could anyone enlighten me what I'm searching for?

Better still, has anyone got one going spare? :)

  6. that type of scew is known as a cheese head if you can get to a screwfix they sell boxes of selelection of sizes of bolts screws and nuts etc, they are good to purchase so you have a ready stock of spares when and if you need them, also if they are a bit too long just cut them down to size.

i have multipacks of bolts screws nuts and washers saves loads of time and also money buying the odd nut or bolt from EBay or a known supplier

  7. You hope they’re the right thread pitch ;)

Kays Fasteners on the eBay are my faves. Or AHC if you live near Camberley. Their shop is a wonderland…

I've bought pan head Phillips like the ones that were on there, although stainless steel ones :)

Very sensible, IIRC you have to balance them on the end of the screwdriver to fit them.

I dont, as you cant retrieve them with a magnet when you drop them somewhere awkward..

  14. Yep, you can't fish stainless out. See also: washers.

  15. Not entirely true - I just went through my nuts and bolts collection. Some stainless items will pick up with a magnet, others only weakly.
It depends on the proportion of austenite and martensite present, but I'll leave that for somebody else to explain.

I guess it also depends on the strength of said magnet. My little magnet on a telescopic stick, won’t pick up any stainless screws
