If it’s just your rear brakes could it be the brake balance valve

    Ok the Brazza it is.
This bus is a South African ex-minibus and had a particularly hard life. No rot to speak of but EVERY mechanical part was trashed. The bracket that holds the clutch pedal spindle has been welded up for instance (no friction in the spindle though).
The brake pedal was all perfect I think and the new spring works well, so I think it's returning fine and not sticking. I did replace the one way valve too. I'll revisit the brakes when I've fitted the servo in the vain hope it sorts the problem out.

Hopefully, as everything will then be new it'll prove to have been the servo. I'm with you thinking the M/C seal caused the servo to fill, the vacuum sucks on it constantly, but IME once the servo has been contaminated with brake fluid it's only a matter of how long before it fails so it's a moot point.

I think I got up to 3 times trying old servo/m/c from ebay, VZi or wherever. All worked for a while so can't complain, but the best was about 3 months before both servo and M/C were replaced. I was quite choosy too, I bought them in one piece and only with cut brake pipe stubs attached so there was a chance they were working when the van was scrapped, not just someone's trash.

I haven't had a problem with the Brazil ones but longest I've had one is 6 years and counting.

In retrospect I'm a clown for putting the old servo back on, especially given that I'd replaced literally every other part in the brake system with decent quality stuff. I bought the ATE m/c from Schofields and even got Bigg Red to refurb the ATE calipers as I wasn't confident with them.
Won't be out there today - it's like an oven!

Yes rears would have been easier to sort I think. It's the fronts though. I did completely strip and clean the balance valve though.

    I now have working flaps!

It's always the way. One rear cylinder goes, the other will follow shortly after.
This bus when I added servo was the first one where I'd learnt to cut to the chase but if it had had one already I'd have given it a go like you did.

Thanks zedders. I'll gird what's necessary and find some enthusiasm to have another crack.

As planned, fitted my @davidoft rear seat belt mounts and new belts to match the fronts. Not quite engine removal in a field, but another job off the list!

I know I know. I must admit that the house and garden have suffered a bit over the last three years with me having two project cars on the go together. So my attentions have been diverted somewhat this year.

Full of enthusiasm from TE, I finally got around to cleaning all the swarf off the pistons, following the balancing I did a couple of weeks ago

Now stripped, cleaned, re-weighed, reassembled and coated in oil

So you don't need a new engine after all. Looks like that was the wrong seal from how it's been squashed, there are choices in a gasket set.

  19. Post techenders check over, one down link bar on my new hex bar linkage had worked a bit loose on the left hand side and the right hand carb still wasn't fully closing. Tightened the bar and readjusted the down link length so the downlink pulled the carb fully closed.

Also found an air leak on the dizzy vacuum advance take off on the left hand carb, I don't use the vacuum port (I don't have an SVDA) it had a small rubber boot over the end of the take off, the boot had a hole in the end, it was possibly perished.

What's the best way to block the vacuum take off spigot, without permanently sticking gunk that I can't then ever remove into the hole, e.g. araldite?

Once I have blocked the vacuum port, it's time for a tune up.
