Side Step

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by 78Moonraker, Mar 4, 2021.

  1. Hello,

After chatting on here about Devon's optional extra of a side step for their bus, I decided to look for one.

I now have one from ebay for my '78 Moonraker and have cleaned it up.

I have offered it up to the bus but can not see how it fitted as it seems that you would need to drill up under the floor pan to make holes for bolts/screws to hold it.

Does anyone know or have fitted an original Devon side step that can help me?

    Thanks.:)

  2. From memory, you do have to drill fixing points in the chassis. I had one, but chucked it as it had hit something in a field :(

As it’s a Devon just use some old nails from a pallet.

One attaches to the chassis and inner sill, the other bolts through the belly pan

  5. Thanks for the replies.

I can see where the part near the step could attach to the chassis & inner sill but not sure where you mean for the belly pan. Is there any where in particular they should attach.

Do you know what type of bolts are needed as I can not see how they would stay secure to the inner sill or the belly pan as there is nowhere to access the bolts to put a nut on the other end of the thread?

Any help to both these questions & any other help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

The chassis rails and inner sills are box section so you can’t get a nut, bolt or spanner in there.

I think your options are :

    1. Weld it in place.
    2. Use rivnuts

Welding is strong but more difficult to reverse if you change your mind.

I was going to use rivnuts so that the step is removable if required. With rivnuts it’s easy to fit and remove the step at will.
