Saves a lot of F ing about if it just stops dead! The first farting failing cheap module I came across (or heard of) was very difficult to diagnose.

  3. But why would you ??

  4. Possibly easier when it stops dead but then you start looking for ignition faults - switch , coil short etc etc ....
Ignition faults are the worst !!

As an aside I fitted an old style 009 Pertronix in 2001 (?) and ran it up to 2017 without any problems, I only swapped it to try out a cheapo SVDA which transformed the pick up from tickover so kept it on .

Yeh, the SVDSs sound like a definite running advantage over none vac. But you could have these with points.

Why, because I don’t like electronic wizardry that can just fail on you. You’ll generally get home with points and the entire replacement dizzy with points fitted, so the carry around spare, is £29

  6. Fine as a spare I suppose ...

  7. Do you carry spares for your daily driver? It’ll have lots of electrics that could fail and strand you.

I Carry a coil and spare pretimed dizzy/condenser with points. Would you recommend anything else?

  9. Throttle and clutch cables...
On the premis if I've got them I won't need 'em

Wasn’t that for your taco so not technically an ignition breakdown.

I didn’t and still don’t carry any spares.

  11. Not the taco, the trigger for the fuel relay but effectively the same thing, yes.

As zed said, an electrical problem masquerading as an ignition problem

Personally, no because there are too many things to fail. And if it costs more than a few hundred to fix, its going to the breakers, as I hate it for the time it trapped my thumb down the back of the engine when (eventually successfully) changing an EGR valve. That got to the point of starting to get my phone out with the other hand, put it on speaker and work out who to phone for help..

The bus has a few points of failure. Points and condensers wear out and electronic ignitions overheat. Carrying a spare distributor fitted with one or the other seems to make sense, along with the clutch and throttle cables. The kind of parts you can fit at the roadside.

Is it all okay now @CollyP?
Have you got a new module or are you still borrowing @Lasty ‘s accuspark?

  14. Its with a man to attend to the Accuspark And other issues , my dizzy was just to get it over there - Dan the man

  15. I posted a non starting fault on here recently and I incorrectly blamed the Pertronix module, turned out to be 3 grubby plugs and 1 faulty plug. 4 new plugs and now it starts on the key and runs a treat.

The mgb has its original lucas points and condenser distributor and with regular maintenance, it starts and runs well. I do prefer the points setup and its so easy to take the distributor out and clean/reset points or replace.
