Calm down Wilf I’m really not that interested Just when I was thinking you had a sense of humour I think like grumpy there it went off with your engine
no Wilf I sold the van And bought the caravan get it right nipper And grumpy knew that he’s been following me for ages
It would be nice to have a Subaru thread without all this nonsense. The OP has asked a simple question.
I suppose you could drive another half hour before you need to fill up but if you’re concerned about the planet (or wallet), I don’t think a Scooby engine is the answer. But my comment was tongue in cheek.
I’ve just built a 2,316cc type 4 for about half the cost of a Scooby conversion. You need to search but all Type 4 parts are still available and complete long block Type 4 engines are available too.
i'm in the same boat. i'd like a big type 4 and compared to prices i've seen previously for drive-in-drive-out subaru conversion i still think a vw motor is going to be cheaper but i'm honestly open to whichever way works out most cost effective. @pkrboo are you in a position to publish your pricing?
My Fellows conversion is a 2.0 litre non turbo with my existing gearbox but with slightly longer ratios in 3rd and 4th. On our last two summer holidays I kept a pretty good record of consumption. 2017 - average was just under 29 mpg but we did have a tow bar bike rack with three bikes on it. 2018 - I don't think we took the bike rack and got anywhere between 27 and 32.4 mpg depending on fast I drove it. before that with my 1700 I reckon I got close to 20 mpg as an average, I never did find out why it was so low, but it has made considerable difference to us. Hopefully a sensible answer
I don't care what engine is in my bus. As it happens it's a 2L type 4 but if it were to blow up I'd consider the most cost effective option be that a Type 4, Type 1, VW Polo, Scooby or a coal bolier! People get so uptight and precious.
