if he's in Sheffield, tell him to ask a steelworker why it's a bad idea - can't be more than a few feet away from one in Sheff!
To be fair I think he’s probably a very good mechanic and has worked on lots of different vehicles but of late they’ve been mainly wagons and farm equipment/machinery where they need more of a belt. I will drop my camping mallet off later . He used to work in Attercliffe in steel works days. Maybe he thinks we are both too weedy to do much damage?
In the end, undoing the big nut and pulling it apart may be all you can do. In which case you have to put the wheel on and chock it well as the handbrake has no hope of holding against a 6 foot breaker bar with somebody jumping on it. Its probably a rusty lip on the drum. If you can get a Dremel in there you may be able to grind the rust back to metal, and push it around until it comes off. Then unless the drum has been damaged, you should consider cleaning up the lip and reusing it , my OG drums were still a lot more circular than the replacements I bought, those gave me difficulty adjusting the handbrake properly as they bound hard every 180 degrees and spun freely between binding..
I would use two big screwdrivers between the drum and backplate where its dented and opposite and gently lever and wiggle outwards, do it carefully and you may get some drum movement, its not the best method but has worked for me before. You will need to repair the dented backplate anyway.
agreed, another method is to take 2 bolts and screw them into the threaded holes in the brake drum which forces the drum off. not tried this method myself but lots on youtube do it successfully. search on youtube for removing stuck brake drum. ericthecarguy has a clip worth watching.
Nice idea...but there aren’t any jacking holes on a Bay, unfortunately . At least not on a late. That would be far too sensible. There are some on my Atco mower, however. Flywheel just popped off
Doesn't need them as you can undo the big nut to get it off. Removing the brake drum is only for inspection any work on the brakes you take the hub and drum off.
Not sure I agree....you introduce a good few additional variables in to the process. But, if it works for you, and may make life easier for others, why not!
I dont get what you gain by undoing the hub nut, someone explain ? If the drum is caught on the brake shoes ......... ????? Does it give more wiggle on the drum or ???
Quick photo update. I’ve just taken these of the holes in the brake drum, and my bit bent back plate. I see no screws
