  1. So you are basically saying when I get old the French health service is going to say bye...

At 50 year old a got a letter saying I had to see my docteur ,of course I ignored it :p the letter came every month  at 51 and a lot of nagging from mrs lef I went ,the docteur said I need a check up  ,he booked me in hospital the following Friday ,I did spool tests ,blood tests, pee tests, went on the travelateur, went in the tunnel, the lung test etc etc...

Went back a week later and they said I was in great health (I did tell them) ,Preventive medicine cost less in the future ,unfortunately the nhs have not the resources to do this for every 50 years old ,so you my friends have the short straw...;)

I have a 87 client going in for a heart by pass ,he is overweight ,I was talking to my ex wife (nhs manager) and she said he would not even get considered for a op and if he did he would have two years to wait...

    No ,I will stay put..

  2. I haven't read the whole thread, so this point may have been made already, but all the kids I've know that were home schooled were utter weirdos. Just a thought:)

Anyone remember Ranchera from JK days?
He spent half his life defending his home schooled kids from things that normally educated kids would have just taken in their stride.

I think that was his character rather than the home schooling, pretty sure he was one of the over-protective types who think their child is being bullied wherever they go and ran out of schools.

  5. Yep, those soapbox 'debates' with So-Cal were the only reason I kept going there by the end;)
Then he threw his toys out the pram and left for good. I wonder if he's on here:)

He was a really nice chap, i first met him at techenders when he'd arrived with no tools and no idea intent on a top end rebuild. He stripped his engine down and lost half the fixings in the grass. Great attitude, it got done. :) He used to take pity on me and make me breakfast, I bet you can't guess what it was? :)

At least you are living inside the French system as a contributor as well as a user.

More I was thinking of the typical Brit pensioner who never paid taxes in his dream country so has to run home to the NHS or be deprived of drugs like the locals .... as is happening in Greece right now.

  8. Surprise me;)

    I assume you mean ranchera?
He always seemed like a good person on the forum, just very serious about everything, reminded me of a few old vegans I know in brighton;)
I certainly align myself more with his views than so-cal's or Miguel's.
So what did he cook you then;)?

  10. No mate, they have the full works as well if they live here ...

No waiting lists or anything for example old people have cataracts ,here it is two weeks and they are done , over there will be a couple of years depending where you live...

I love the way we Brits bleat on about our marvellous health system "the envy of the world" when in fact it's crap! We suck it up because we want to believe it's true.
I should add that the people I come across in it are great, but the system itself is based on waiting for crisis. Fire fighting.

  13. FWIW, my 90 year old grandmother reckons things were better pre NHS when the London County Council ran the city's health services.

  16. I reckon whether it's a good idea or not depends on the kids, the schools available and the parents.

The kids might have been weird anyway. And if they were weirdos in the first place it's probably a good job they didn't have to go to school to be miserable and lonely and get bullied mercilessly. They probably had a lovely time at home learning with their weird parents instead.

If I did move to France mainstream school would be the "plan A". I reckon the move would be stressful enough as it is without having to home-school. Plus it would be a good opportunity for us all to make friends and integrate, and the kids would learn the language in no time.

  17. Youre half way to dropping out anyway. You got the camper! so rent the house out for 6 or 12 months, camper round France or wherever for that time, picking up work as you go, see how you get on. See how resourceful you are, if you like it etc.
