Surely you have 2 gauges - 1 shows the contents left, 1 for the flow?

Yep. Didn't even cross my mind to look so soon after buying a new bottle.

It's all new to me. I have to get it wrong to learn. That's in my genes I think.

It's from experience for me too. Also afer having one with a leaking tap, I paint the things in a strong washing up liquid to check for leaks everywhere. I also use PTFE tape on the gauge connection to the bottle.

My first hobby bottle lasted about a month! I'd only done a couple of days welding. I had a leak inside the welder and was in the habit of never turning anything off. Still am, but check for leaks now! Next hobby bottle I've made substantial repairs to 2x vans and hardly used 1/4 of it.

  6. I turn it off every time ,I do not trust the bottle, the welder ,the pipe or even the cat, he sits on the welder ,I have lost loads of gas in the past....

  7. Washing up liquid and PTFE tape are massive no no's in the world of Bottled gasses .... Your too old school

  8. why ,I do that?

Normal PTFE tape contains oil, oil and grease are explosive risks with oxygen , special green tape available and Oxy safe.

  10. Washing up liquid is corrosive and contains oil as well .....you can buy special leak spray

  11. And taping joints is totally unnecessary... they're all tapered joints, so it's the faces that seal, not the threads!!

I know it corodes the brass. Not my problem - BOC's - bleedin rip-off merchants, what do I care?
I have proper gas PTFE - thicker stuff innit, I do some gas stuff in vans from time to time. ;)
I had bottle that would not seal. Not going to drive 12 miles and change it.
And lastly The gas is inert - that's why I bought it.

Yes I probably am old school. :)
Please explain the oils bit and why it matter to me mig welding. Genuine question.

I haven't done much this week as I am waiting for a new gas bottle that won't come until Friday. I have ground down some of the side panel and cut out some of the rust in readiness for a patch or four. This afternoon the rear bumper will come off and I will try and work out how to repair the rear end rot.

The oil can cause explosions due to pressure of the gas combined with the fuel of the gas and the ignition source of the oil so yes in theory as you have an inert gas it's less likely to go bang , I think it's good practice many more gasses in bottle are flammable than not and an accident would be pretty horrific if a bottle went bang when it was switched on. So no oil is used with pressure fittings.

Not really Dunc. I couldn't have it without possible future upset, and it wan't going to be finished any time soon as Neil and Cam have more pressing financial requirements than an old VW. So with Lou n I wanting something sorted re the garage, it's the best outcome all round. I was sad , but eh oh onwards and upwards.
