£30,000 in 1984. What could you do with that amount in those days?

I never knew anyone other than my MD and directors who had an house in that price bracket!

    Really. £25k?

  3. My house, a three bedroom detached with CH & a garage was £24,950
The Ferrari was £25,000 - it was red & a GTS, I wanted a GTB so I walked away.

  4. When comparing inflation using a house price nowdays is irrelevant as house prices are now probably twice what they should really be at least... But £30k in 84 is a HUGE amount if money, would have bought you a decent house in the suburbs of South London.

  5. I don't think house prices are a good comparison as those have shot up.

If you use the £4,300 Vauxhall cavalier as a comparator/bench mark, in 1984 your van would have been the same price as 7 cavaliers.

A modern equivalent to the cav would be the insignia, mid range jobbie say, £22k. So, seven times the insignia price would put a modern equivalent at over £150k in today's money. That's a lot to drop on a weekend toy :)

We were living down south and both working. Tom was born in 1984. The house we were living in cost us about £40k. I remember buying a Ford Escort for £4k. I remember buying a Conway Trailer tent for £1k around about then because that was my bonus that year.
£30k was a lot of money

How on earth could someone spend that amount on a camper though? I am just showing my naivety really. I suppose people spend silly money on all sorts of things, and today it is even larger amounts.

Not Woodlanders, but there were 17 Foster and Day made. They are similar and a similar price.

  15. I bought a house in Dunstable for 28 .5 k around that time as Watford was unaffordable ,

Ridiculous amount. I never even knew people paid that sort of money for motorhomes. Shows what a sheltered world I lived in.
