Hi All, I started one of those dangerous routines where you start peeling back things because you don't like..... next thing I know I ripped the whole inside out, but to be honest it needed it. Im after some advice on a few things that I should now do. As you can see by the photos its not brilliant underneath, but there's no signs of excessive rust. I don't see much point in respraying but should I at least think about protecting it with something? Sand it back perhaps and then protect? Once this is sorted Im going to insulate and sound proof all side panels with the bitumen mats that you can get on the market. Just wanted to know what people have with there vans with sound proof and insulation?? what did you use and and where did you put it? Thanks
I'm just going through a similar process. I had a few pin rust holes I filled. Over the course of the last week or so, my son and I have been applying protection primer to the floor. I then have some bubble foil ready to lay as insulation before putting some ply down ready for the floor. Some have suggested having a carpet lay over the top of the insulation and between the ply. Not sure whether I will do that or not at this stage. Then I am in the market for an interior!
Thanks. Mine already had the insulation carpet down, Im not so sure it a good idea as it holds the damp very well! Which bubble wrap you going to use? are you going to use any sound proofing?
Great Vid why would you use anything else! Did you just use this on the side panels or is it worth applying around rear wheel arches and above the engine?
I applied it in the fuel tank area and the roof of the engine bay aswell as over the rear arch tubs Also the door panels and tailgate etc
is that an 'austerity window'?... Whilst the interior's out I'd treat any corrosion with Jenolite or similar, flat back and repaint with enamel...you may as well...it'll stop the corrosion getting any worse. Also, if you intend to install heat/sound insulation, it's as well to read up about it before making any decisions on materials...you could actually encourage corrosion if not applied properly....or be wasting your time and money this is a good article on the subject
im in the same position as you insulation down and bubble wrap in with ply over. just waiting for right time to get an interior!
When I saw this on your build thread I just thought you were just being really tight with the Insulation! Haha! Have you driven the bus with this in? Does it make a big Difference?
The vans not on the road yet But going around tapping the panels with my hand it makes a very noticable differance When shutting the doors they now shut with a dull thud rather than the tinny noise they made before

I bought 30 sheets of Silent Coat from Amazon here for £39.99 and planing on covering about 40% of each panel as that's all you need from some research. @vanorak has some great posts on sound / heat insulation too which I'm going to refer to again when I come to put the interior back in mine after the welding, respray etc etc etc...
Also on a similar subject, can somebody please explain the vapour barrier ? My plan is SC straight onto metal, the the foil covered bubble wrap type insulation onto that, now here's my question, air then vapour barrier? Or?...
behind my ply panels in the back the PO put kingspan insulation panelling in its closer to the ply than the metal body so maybe the air needs to be closer to the body than the interior panels? just a guess?
