Perhaps we can both have teckender s welding lessons?

  5. Might be a good idea - better than me trying to do my suspension doughnuts. If someone is willing to give me pointers in the right direction then that would be enormously helpful.

Point - press - crackle - sizzle - STOP. I said STOP, not carry on and blow a hole! Leave the hole to cool down, don't get mad. Come back to it.
    Try again - point - press - .....

  11. @poptop2 not many would have the balls to take on the project you have taken on and I for one am wating your work with great interest. Your welding will get better with practice. what is good is that you know when youve done a crap wels and you seem to know when penetration hasnt been good. A lot of people like to lay down pigeon poo and say they can weld. It#s nice to see that you're taking your time with it.
Like a few have said, clean all the surfaces up to good bright steel and then you can start doubting your settings and skills. Keep going! it's starting to come together a bit now :)

    What they said^

Hats off to you for honestly showing your work on the van and your welding trip. Everyone is aware you're learning and I expect it's interesting for those that might be considering it themselves. It will become ecouraging for them as you get better which you will. It that respect you're doing the forum a good service.:hattip:

In the case of us *******-takers, from our point of view we've all been there and come out the other side just as we know you will, you're not daft but like everyone you'd like instant results and we'd like you to have instant results, but it takes practice. Having got fed up with cutting up pieces of sheet to practice on in no time flat, I went straight for a rear corner. I cut it and matched it great, then tried to butt weld it at low settings. No penetration so I went over it turned up a bit which was slightly better. Then I welded it from the inside. By the time I'd finished the metal around the weld had shrunk so much it had a waist! Then I moved onto the next panel which went a bit better and so on until eventually I looked ruefully back at the first corner, cut it back off including the shrunken stuff and ordered a new one. Panels are cheap really and it's good practice for the fitting as well as the welding.

I wish the fixer would fix my computer and I could upload a bunch of pictures that would catalogue the progress and get some advice 're the actual weld. I suppose it will be after Christmas now.
